    Stupid memory upgrade question

Well folks I would rather ask a stupid question than make a stupid mistake.....I currently have two memory bays total, and have 6 gigs in each slot for a total of 12 gigs, I checked in command prompt to see what I can upgrade to and here is what I got-Stupid memory upgrade question-c1f0e253d0b841179cfb715ca36c3347.jpg
Now the stupid question-can i put 16 gig sticks in each slot for a total of 32 gigs? Or am I only stuck with putting two 8 gig sticks for that total of 16 gigs? I'm thinking the 16 gig max is the total sum of the two slots. TIA.

You need to check your mobo manual or website for available memory upgrades.

It's usually helpful to supply the make and model of the PC.

Or, take that information to crucial.com. Their memory upgrade information is about as reliable as it gets.

However, if I run that command line stuff on my motherboard, it shows that I have 4 DIMM slots, and lists the maximum memory capacity as (sorta) 128GB.

I interpret that as meaning that your PC has a maximum capacity of 16GB (8GB X 2). Check that before any upgrades. I doubt that there would be much to gain in going from 12GB to 16.

    Just go here
Crucial US | DRAM, Solid State Drive (SSD) & Memory Upgrades
It will tell you exactly what you have and what you can get

    Hi XX007XX,

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

I'd say your results are indicating 16GB max for the mobo.

    16,777,216kb = 16GB

    16GB/2= 8GB/slot

    Mine shows the following for 32GB max;

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>wmic memphysical get maxcapacity
    MaxCapacity33554432

I've found information that suggests the wmic facility may not be the best source. As previously mentioned, the mobo manufacturers site is likely best as they will have tested the PC and it's memory capacity.

This site has a good explanation.

Some versions of windows also limit the amount of RAM it can use.

For Windows 10 (64 bit), it's not an issue for most. Even Win 10 Home supports 128 GB. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...d-bdcd58984333
