SSD not working on AMD based motherboard USB 3 ports

Is anyone aware of USB driver issues on AMD based motherboards? I've been a die hard Intel loyalist but finally built an AMD based system for a friend. I have a problem with a USB SSD drive not working on any of the USB 3 ports on the system.

Symptoms:When I plug the SSD into a USB 3 port, the drive letter may take a very long time to show up (30 seconds plus), although it will sometimes show up quicker. After it finally shows up it may disappear and then reappear again repeatedly. The SSD has 4 partitions and behavior is the same on all partitions. In any case, I can never access the drive from File Explorer (or anything else for that matter). This behavior is the same for ALL USB 3 ports on the system. If I connect the SSD to a USB 2 port it will work perfectly. Also, note that the SSD is bootable. I can boot from the SSD just fine when connected to USB 3 and it is perfectly fine when when I have booted from it.

System Specifics:MSI X570-A Pro Motherboard AMD Ryzen 3900X CPU The SSD in question is a Samsung NVMe SSD in a generic USB 3 enclosure. SSD works fine on every Intel system I have ever tried it on, this is only AMD based system I have ever tried. Windows Version 2004Latest chipset drivers from MSI are installed.

Things Tried:Tried other devices in the USB ports. Thumb drives, hard disks, WiFi adapters, etc. All other devices, both USB 2 and USB 3, work just fine. Checked BIOS setting - there is an XHCI enable / disable. I know that this should be disabled for Win 10, but I tried both ways with no difference. Also tried CSM both enabled and disabled, again, no difference. Uninstalled all USB ports from Device Manager and allowed Windows to redetect / reinstall them. As noted earlier, booting from the same SSD works just fine so I am suspecting some sort of issue with the drivers. Anyone else see issues like this?

disappearing usb maybe a cable issue.
Is the enclosure self powered? if not maybe that the 3.0 plugs aren't putting out
    enough power
Have you tried initiating the drive in Disk manager?

Doesn't explain the Intel v AMD bit though.

I'm not optimistic that this will help, but you could try the latest AMD chipset drivers for X570: 2.10.13.408. (Just released.) The latest at MSI are 2.07.21.306.

I have never seen the issue that you describe.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

A few notes: It's not the cable - same cable works everywhere else and on the USB 2 ports of this system, plus it boots on the same system with the same cable. Just to be safe, I have now tried another cable with the same results.

Also, it's an SSD - very low power draw it is not that it exceeding limits of power for USB port. Note too that it works on USB 2 ports which provide a lot less power than a USB 3 port.

Can't access it even from Disk Manager.

Off the top of my head, check to see if legacy usb is enabled in the bios and that the drive can be seen there.

While this may seem a hardware issue it could be a software one .
A bit extreme but deleting the usb 3 drivers and rebooting.

for the software Sfc and dism checks .

    @hsehestedt

    Two things...

    1. See the pic below.
    2. I had some problem on my x570 chipset mobo. Called ASUS and they also said use the AMD chipset driver.

All my other drivers I got from the motherboard manufacturer. The ONLY driver I otherwise needed from an alternate source, was the AMD chipset driver, which I got from AMD.

Lastly, you said you tried different computers, different cables, hooked to the external enclosure. You should probably try a different enclosure. Maybe there's a conflict with the enclosure's firmware and the new mobo's USB 3.x?

Also... these new chipset mobos seem to be getting BIOS updates... really fast.

I have a similar problem to what the OP has described, only with spinning disks in an enclosure. The enclosure is self powered, but plugging it into a USB3 port on my motherboard (ASUS ROG STRIX X470-F Gaming) causes the drive to go on and offline repeatedly. Trying to use the drive for backups was impossible, much less just reading or writing normally to it. It worked much better in USB2 ports for reasons that I was never able to figure out.

I never was able to solve my problem with the enclosure and USB3 ports. I just went out and bought a removable drive caddy for my backup disks.

I know this isn't really much help, but I just wanted to point out to the OP that he isn't alone in this AMD/USB3 frustration.
