    how to make unallocated space merge with the primary partition

    Hello in the pic I have a drive that I intend to clone to a larger drive.

    Now I am guessing that the clone will have some unallocated space on it and if that unallocated space is situated behind the recovery partition how do I move it into the primary partition making C: drive that much larger>

    Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Most programs that clone drives will resize the Windows partition either up or down to fit a new drive. What program were you thinking of using? If I have it I could do a test with a VM to verify that the program in question does this.

    @ICIT2LOL

    I would probably just make a full OS image backup, then restore that backup to the new drive.

    Ok thanks for the replies and I am going to use Macrium Reflect to clone and hopefully the program will indeed ad in that extra space in the C: partition.

    As usual nothing seems to be simple in Windows eh?

    Some bad news: I just tried it with Macrium Reflect and it is now allowing me to resize the partition. I can size it downward (make it smaller) but I cannot seem to make it larger.

    I have some other ideas I want to try, but that will need to wait until morning.

    I would look into MiniTool Partition Wizard -

    OldNavyGuy is absolutely correct - you could crtainly use a partitioning tool to accomplish this, but I was curious, so I posted the question on the Macrium forum. Below is the thread. Note that I got a response saying that you can do this using Macrium alone without the need for a partitioning tool.

    In case you are interested, here is the thread:

    Resizing a partition when restoring

    NOTE: I have not validated this yet. I'm already up way past the time I had expected so I'll give this a try in the morning

    To use Macrium, follow the video.
    NOTE: my windows disk is 111 GB and will be cloned to larger disk of 238GB
    click on clone->Select destination disk then drag and drop the first 3 partitions
    Click on "Cloned Partition properties" -> Click on Max, enter the size for last partition (505 in my case)->OK
    click Next->Finish
    IMPORTANT: In order to boot from the new disk, you also need to update the BCD using "Fix boot problem" from Macrium Rescue disk.

    Alternatively, if minitool is avalable, you can also use it.

    Thanks to you both as a matter of fact I stumbled over a YouTube just before I shut down last night and it is the same procedure as in topguns post so I shall do it like that as it is simple and would save a lot of work attempting to resize the partitions after a straight clone

    AlI have to get now is a new drive as most of my old spares are either too old or small to be used. I would rep you all but I have to spread it around first so please accept my appreciation for your help.
