    "CPU isn't supported"

Hey gang i have a friend who got this message "CPU isn't supported" when they tried to upgrade to W10. We tried the Media Creation Tool and it came back with "You can't install Windows 10 because your processor doesn't support CompareExchange128". So where do i send her from here ?? Read some articles that says MS will change their download requirments later to allow everyone to download, not sure i'm believing that !!

Anyone got any suggestions for a work around on those messages above ???

    Running W7

    Thanks
    Chuck

As jds63 said the most common problem is something in the BIOS needs to be turned on. First check to make sure you have the latest BIOS revision from the motherboard manufacturer.

An easy way to check if the CPU will run Windows 10 is to download the Coreinfo utility here:
    Coreinfo
Unzip the contents of the folder (I put it in my documents folder), then open a command prompt. Using the cd (change directory) command, navigate to the directory where you unzipped the folder. (so if it's in the documents folder the path looks like this: C:\Users"Your_Username_Here"\Documents\Coreinfo\Coreinfo.exe). Here is an example output:

    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10240]
    (c) 2015 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    C:\Users\GXIII\Documents\Coreinfo>Coreinfo.exe

The line "CX16 * Supports CMPXCHG16B instruction" means it does support CompareExchange128, and confirms that something in the BIOS is set wrong.

jds63, did you end up finding a solution to this issue? i have the same problem trying to upgrade Windows 7 x64 to 10 Pro. i haven't tried either of these tools to confirm support for my CPU yet, but i'm hopefull.. it's an AMD 4000+ socket 939, so maybe not..

You probably should have started a new thread on this.

    See here:

Microsoft confirms some older AMD processors do not support Windows 8.1

(It applies to Windows 10 as well.)

AMD led in introducing X64 desktop processors, but Microsoft requires some extensions that aren't present in early AMD CPUs.

Hello! This is one extra requirement (others are NX/PAE support) in order to install the 64-bit version. This means that your CPU probably passes the minimum requirements for Windows 8 & 10 32-bit but not for 64-bit. How much RAM does she have? If it is up to 4GB, then you can create a GenuineTicket.xml file as described in this tutorial, backup all data and the format and clean-install Windows 10 32-bit. After installation is complete, use the file to activate Windows 10.

If you have more than 4GB RAM, then you need the 64-bit version, but you cannot install it officially. Unofficially, there are some tools that allow you to make a partial Windows 10 installation on the disk. Then patch some specific system files to bypass requirement checks. This will allow Setup to resume and complete and then boot into Windows 10. But because the files are patched, the digital signature is invalid and you need to sign them again. Otherwise every time you load Windows, you will get an error message that ntoskrnl.exe has invalid signature and be presented with the troubleshooting screen. From there, you must select the Advanced startup options and then to Disable driver signature (test mode). I had tried that for a test PC but no matter what I did I could not get rid of the requirement to enter Advanced startup options and then select 7 (Disable driver signature). This is not really convenient, so I recommend to install Windows 10 32-bit, if she has up to 4GB, or stick with Windows 7 64-bit, if she has more than 4GB.

If you are interested, post again and I'll tell you which tools you need for the patch.

Thanks, do you happen to know if there's a list of unsupported CPUs somewhere? I'd like to see if mine is listed.

I don't know of such a list. Microsoft once maintained a Windows hardware compatibility list, but I'm unable to find it online at this time.

If you web search, you'll find multiple references to the Athlon 64 X2 lacking the CMPXCHG16b instruction, and that it's required to install the X64 version of Windows 10. Means nothing to me, but apparently it's a security feature required since Windows 8.1. (But not in Windows 8.0. Bit of a nasty surprise for a few people when they tried to upgrade from Win 8 X64 to 8.1.)

(I had an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ system. A fairly high-end desktop, built in late 2005. It was handed down twice. I think it died less than a year ago. It was probably still running XP at the time.)
