Generally I agree. Although updating the BIOS is very risky, it is a good idea to do so when installing a new operating system (not just Windows 10, it could be anything). This way you maximize compatibility with newer technologies that your current BIOS may not support properly. Next step is to download any drivers beforehand. A common scenario is that you cannot connect to the internet before installing the LAN or Wi-Fi driver and hence you cannot download any drivers, unless of course you have a second computer you can use. So update the BIOS to the latest available (in some cases this could not be enough so you have to update to the last BETA version which is newer than the last release version), and then download all drivers for the target OS or similar (Windows 7 or 8 if Windows 10 drivers are not available). Once you have all the drivers, you can proceed with the installation of the operating system.
