Run either/both Snappy Driver Installer (SDI) or SnailDriver (both freeware)

TIP : use judiciously. They both have a tendency to run off and want to update every driver on the device, but can be controlled easily. Only update/install the driver(s) you want/need.

Could that be a Dial-Up Modem?

A quick Web search suggests that it may be part of the Intel MEI. Downloads for Intel(R) Management Engine Interface (Intel(R) MEI)

I'd be more confident with that suggestion if the OP had provided a model number for the machine.

Still wondering what "platform" it might be.

Care to provide the actual detailed model number for the machine? It'd be nice to be able to research what the problem might be, rather than guessing.

    Thanks.

It appears to use the G965 chipset. That dates from June of 2006.

Intel doesn't offer direct downloads for that any more. You may need to get something from third party sites. Possible example: Now downloading: Intel Chipset Device Software Driver 10.1.18 - TechSpot

    Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I have now solved the problems i had. I installed an acer vista amt driver and ran a compatibility check since it was an old vista driver and it worked. That solved the pci simple communications controller. I had another unknown device next to that one that turned out to be an nvidia away mode. I got the driver and had to install it manually through device manager. All is fixed now. Thank you too all who took the time to reply to me and the great advice given.

I'm impressed that a Vista driver worked, although I shouldn't have been. I wonder whether Windows Update may serve up something newer?

Thanks for posting back, with details. That increases the historical value of the thread immensely.
