The SATA port is inside the case on the motherboard but some motherboards also provide an eSATA port on the back of the computer near the USB ports. The only cables that can interchange are USB 2 [black] and USB 3 [blue] so there should be no danger with getting them wrong.

The adapter i bought is a YIY USB3 to SATA/IDE from amazon(on page 2).The hard drive is a Seagate 80gig.
It connects to the hard drive with the 40 pin connector with the mains lead into a 12v socket on the adapter and
a 12v four wire connector from the adapter to the main plug on the hard drive.Unfortunately I don`t know anything about
SATA port, power connectors or data cables but I`ll see what I can sort out. Thanks again all for the help.
Oh my, that is an old one!
That hard drive is a PATA drive and unless your motherboard is very old then you will not be able to connect that directly. Sorry for the red herring.

So now we need to figure out why the adapter is not working, since you will need that to access your data.

In your picture, I can see how the adapter connects to the hard drive and how it powers the hard drive, but I don't see how the adapter gets it's power. That would be good to know (see).

Are there any lights on the adapter that would indicate that it is on and powered?

    Terry,

You referred to the Amazon page but didn't post the link. We'll be able to offer much better help once we understand what equipment you are using.

Is this what you mean? USB3.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter, YIY USB 3.0 Hard Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

If so then your photo doesn't actually show the adapter being connected to its power but your post explains that it is [see Amazon product page photos 2 & 3].
    {With typical Amazon sloppiness, photo 4 is wrong. The power connection is absent yet is essential.}

You connected in the correct sequence?
    - Connect HDD [both data & power connections] to adapter
    - Connect power to adapter
    - Connect adapter to computer

    Terry,

Your photo shows that you have connected the disk correctly to the adapter.

If your computer is not detecting the disk when connected through that adapter after it has been plugged in] then I think that either the adapter or the disk is defective.

By the way, you are taking a photo then opening it on your computer then taking a screenshot of the photo being shown in that application and then posting that screenshot.
You could just post the original photo
[as you did with the first one].
