Epson XP-345 printer works but not scanner

    Windows 10 1903 1836.

About 3 days ago I went to use my printer but it wasn't 'seen' on the network and I also noticed that there were no printers showing in Device Manager.

I'm not at all sure how I got the printer to work but it was something to do with default printer. Even now, it plays up again and is a no-show in DM.

But at no time over this period has the scanner worked, even when the printer is seen, the scanner is not.

    Three things...

    1. Make sure you're looking at the main PC first for the printer issue. Move to others after that.
    2. If the printer is connected by USB cable, check the connection is good (and cable ). You could also try switching USB ports.
    3. Assuming we're talking main PC - If the printer isn't showing in Device Manager that says there are no drivers... or the printer can't be seen for some reason. Goes back to drivers and/or point #2.

I can't seem to find that printer - "Epson XP-345" on Epson's office site. Where'd you get it from?

Anyway I have an Epson XP-960 and it requires the utilities drivers for features like scanning or disk writing (labels). Here's the utilities drivers for the Epson XP-960 multi-printer.

Sorry, haven't been able to get back before!

Oscer1, you are right, the XP-345 is my printer/scanner. I understand it is now obsolete! But it is being supported as you found the software etc.

sygnus21, I don''t have a USB cable, it picks up the network signal. I have re-installed the scan software several times. I think the software is installed correctly but a setting is wrong somewhere. Just checked after starting laptop and printer - not shown in Device Manager but it is there under 'Hidden'. I don't get what is going on there, I expected it to be visible when DM is opened. I also see that the printer is always shown as 'offline' with Connect greyed out.

    Yeah, I see that's Epson-Ireland.

Got it - printer is Wi-Fi. With that... As Oscar pointed to your printer drivers you need to install the

    • Driver
    • Epson Scan software
    • Epson Scan updater software

You might also need to install the "Other Software" in the "Event Manager" software.

Also, are you sure you're looking at the main PC (the PC where you installed the software for the printer)?

Have you checked you printer's network settings?

I'd also suggest you go over the owner's manual for said printer. It can be downloaded via Oscar's link under Manual & Documentation.

Anyway if things are right you should see both scanner and printer under Device Manager as shown for my Epson XP-960 Wi-Fi printer...

(There are not "hidden". And the printer is powered off)

    Good luck.

    hi sygnus21,

I'll start with your last point. On my kit, it makes no difference whether the printer is on or off, Device Manager shows printer and scanner but only under hidden. Epson Scan fails but when I try to print a test page there is quite a long wait but it does print OK.
Whenever I attempt to update printer and scanner drivers I am assured I have the latest. Could you remind me please about checking printer network settings, I'm not sure what expect. Several days ago I did uninstall everything called Epson and reinstalled. And yes, I am only working with main laptop. When it printed the test page I noticed that Connect was still greyed out. but surely it must have been connected to print?

    Hi folks
not the answer to OP's problem but a possible get around.

Look at Vuescan (OK commercial product) but works with zillions of older scanners -- many of which are quite OK -- I think you can trial it before buying to see if it works. My link is for Linux (I'm on a Linux laptop today) but I've used this very successfully on Windows for older Canon and Agfa Film (negative) scanners for digitising old negatives and slides.

VueScan Scanner Software for macOS Catalina, Windows 10, and Linux

    cheers

As I said earlier, you'll need to go over the owner's manual which you can download. I don't have your setup so I can't walk you through the procedures. We can help but you'll have to do the work.

And Vuescan isn't going to fix a network printer problem. Nor do you need it for the scanner since Epson already provides drivers for the scan feature. I'm also very familiar with Vuescan as a previous user with a perpetual free upgrade license for life. It won't solve the issue at hand.

Well now. I've been busily swotting, trying to find out why my printer wasn't working. I discovered that my printer was being shown as a WSD printer on it's own port, which, in my state of semi ignorance didn't seem right to me. I discovered too that this state was usually achieved, unsuspectingly, by ticking the box to allow Windows to deal with the state of the printer/scanner rather than electing to make the printer the default.
I found it odd that although I could get the printer working normally I couldn't get the scanner to be seen at all and every time I tried to update the printer/scanner drivers I always already had the latest. And I kept getting instances where I was being told that there wasn't a printer attached when clearly it was as it was working!
I decide to rip all Epson stuff off my laptop and started over, taking care to ensure that the above faults were addressed and finally, all was well. In fact the re-install went without a hitch, so I now have my working printer scanner working again.

My thanks to sygnus 21 and oscer for their input, what a splendid group this is!
