    Touchpad Issues

I have an Acer Aspire laptop, W10, ver. 1909.
For the past few months, my touchpad has been acting up.

It works fine for awhile, but then it slowly degrades to where tapping has no effect and it gets hard to move the cursor. Eventually, it will be on a 95% freeze. Restarting the computer resolves the issue completely, until it happens again.

I played with the touchpad settings, but no help. I didn’t see anything glaring in Task Manager that’s eating up CPU or memory, but I might be missing something. Suggestions?

Oh, mouse works okay, but I prefer to keep the laptop on my lap and use the touchpad.

This happens about twice a week. I use the computer 3-7 hours a day. There is no one program that creates the problem, so I cannot reproduce it. It always happens after I’ve been on the computer for awhile, but I don’t think it’s overheating.

Hi, this sounds more like a hardware issue. From something I read, try pressing on each of the corners firmly for 2-3s and see if anything improves. One of them may have some effect. You might be lucky- or not.

One of these may be the appropriate driver:

    What version is yours?

It seems your model number is Aspire E15 (E5-575-xxx)

First try reinstalling the driver from Acer's web site. Does the problem happen in all accounts or just one account?

Did you try pressing firmly on the corners as I suggested?
Capacitive charge build-up could stop a touchpad functioning. But there are different technologies:

    Yes, that's hardware.

    Dalch:

Thanks for the quick reply. I had tried Device Manager. All it said was HID compliant mouse. Manufacturer is Microsoft. Would that be the touchpad?? Your link indicated that Acer laptop touchpads are synaptics. I suspect that's it

I didn't try the corner press. Don't I try that when the problem occurs. It hasn't yet, but I'm sure it will.

I'll also try turning it off (fn/F7 on mine) then on

HID compliant/Microsoft- sounds like you've a basic driver installed. Perhaps you should try updating it using Device Manager, and if no luck, download the driver specifically for your laptop and install it.

You could see what Speccy says (download, free):

    Speccy

    HID compliant mouse
    Synaptics

No touchpad mentioned. I RARELY use a mouse

I'll wait for the problem to recur and try the 2 things I mentioned

If no joy, then update driver
    Good plan?

If your touchpad is not working, it may be a result of a missing driver or out-of-date driver. If after installing drivers manually issue persists, try uninstalling your touchpad driver.

Open Device Manager, right-click the touchpad driver, and select Uninstall. Restart your device and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver. Its better if you use some driver updater tool rather installing touchpad drivers manually.

The software or such driver updater tools detects devices that are in critical conditions in terms of outdated, broken or missing drivers. It then downloads the essential files needed for updates and gives the user access to set up the updates.

Well, overdue for an update. The problem still occurs, about once every 9 days or so.
I tried fn/F7, which toggles the touchpad on/off. So, I press it once, wait 3 seconds, press it again, and to my surprise, it WORKS!!...Perfectly, every time. That's good enough for me as a practical matter.
