Update Driver in Device Manager not working after KB4568831

Why is the Update Driver in Device Manager not working after installing KB4568831? When I use Update Driver it instantly reports that the best drivers for your device are already installed instead of searching online for drivers. How can I fix that? The online driver search and update from device manager stopped working after KB4568831.

I have that Update installed, and mine still searches for device drivers. It searches for them VERY fast.
Is yours possibly doing the same... searching VERY fast?

I have the same issue. Searching very fast means it's not connecting to the Microsoft windows update server for drivers. The only fix is to uninstall KB4568831.

Or... it is, and you happen to already have the latest driver?

I would imagine it can do a driver search a LOT faster than a Windows Update search. For a Windows Update, it has to battle the congestion on the MS servers, plus compare what it finds there to your whole Windows install.

For a driver search, it's searching a much smaller server, and only comparing to a single driver on your system.

I reinstalled Windows 10 and then reinstalled KB4568831 and then tried to update the LAN and Wireless drivers and it searched too fast and reported that the drivers are up to date even though the driver is the original inbox version. The search should take a few seconds so it can download the latest drivers. It won't download if it searches very fast. Searching very fast mean it's only doing a local search instead of an online search. It's the same even if I disconnect from the internet.

Well, you got me. I always do my drivers manually, from the manufacturer's website. I've never used Device Manager to search for drivers. Well, except just now, to see how mine behaved.
And I do have the latest drivers.

/e Unless you are having a specific problem with a certain driver... I would just get them from ASUS...

For your motherboard: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO (WI-FI) | Gaming Motherboard | ASUS USA

ASUS has a really decent webpage for it's motherboards. Just Google your make and model, click on the Support (circled in yellow), choose your OS, and there's every download associated with your motherboard.
Personally, I'd rather have ASUS's drivers than the ones from Microsoft.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties.

Click on Advanced System Settings on the left.

Click on the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Installation Settings button.

Select Yes if you want Windows to download drivers automatically.

This also needs to be enabled for Device Manager to get drivers.

The caveat is that Windows Update will automatically install any drivers it finds, without your permission.

To counter that, I would recommend using the free tool Windows Automatic Updates Manager.

    - or -

Leave drivers alone unless you are having an issue with a device (my recommendation), and get drivers from either your system manufacturer, or the device vendor when you do.

I did some testing. Deleted a device driver completely from the system and disabled network. Confirmed that Windows could not find a driver. Reconnected network. Windows would still tell me that the best driver was already installed (a generic driver from Windows). I was planning on kicking off Windows update but before I could, it already updated the driver.

So, it's possible that searching for an updated driver triggered Windows update to search for the driver, but, whatever the case, it did update from the Internet as confirmed in my update history.

Edit: Bottom line is that it looks like this is by design. It may simply kick off a search via Windows update now.

As I and others have said... the best place to find motherboard or vid card drivers is at the manufacturer's website.

I gave you a rep point, for Googling your own answer.
