PS2 Mouse Quit -- How to Troubleshoot

7/18/2020 AM mouse worked fine. System down several hours and activated again 7/18/2020 PM and mouse
NOT recognized, but mouse laser (light) active.
Swapped out this mouse with 2nd PS2 mouse and still does NOT work.
Put on 1st mouse using a PS2 to USB convertor - Mouse WORKS fine.
    Only changes to system were:

    1) 7/14/2020 -- Windows Update (Windows 10 v 1909). -- Seems odd update would cause issues 4 days later.
    2) 7/18/202 -- Defragmented HD.

    So my assessment is either:
    1) The PS2 Hardware MODO port went out
    2) The PS2 Mouse driver got corrupted during Defragmenting.

    MOBO = ASUS H97 Plus .

    QUESTIONS
    ------------------
What is best way to test for:
    1) hardware PS2 port failure?
    2) Reinstall just the PS2 mouse driver under WIndows 10 ?

    Thanks

Uninstall the Device and drivers in Device Manager then reboot.

If the mouse works fine on an PS2 to USB adapter then that indicates that there is nothing wrong with the mouse or the driver.
Sounds like a problem with the port. AFAIK, a PS2 port does not use a driver.
Always a good idea to test the port with another PS2 device.

The PS2 port is controlled at the BIOS level. You could check your BIOS settings to see if there is something obvious there.
As a long shot you could try resetting BIOS defaults (be sure you know what the current non-default setting are), or perform a ClearCMOS/CLRTC procedure.

Thanks for the Responses. Will try them.

Also found this on a Microsoft Community Forum -- this at least ties things to an Update as the one on 7/18/2020 was cumulative. Found "a" reg entry for i8043prt--- not the location mentioned below - and Start = 3. Changed to "1".
    Did NOT resolve my problem.
If Windows 10 is installed or re-installed with no PS/2 mouse and keyboard connected, it will turn off the PC/2 ports and thereafter never detect any PS/2 devices. This may also happen after a major Windows update such as the Creators Update since is essentially installing a new version of Windows 10.

To fix this, temporarily connect a USB keyboard and mouse so you can control WIndows, open the registry editor (regedit), navigate to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt

edit the Start value and set it to a hex or decimal value of 1. (Turned off =3)

then reboot. You may have to disconnect the USB devices before Windows will use the PS/2 devices.
HOWEVER in further checking the DEFAULT s/b Start = 3. Details:
i8042 is a system service that controls ps2 mouse and keyboard ports.

    Value-Start Type-Description

0-Boot-Specifies a driver that is loaded (but not started) by the boot loader. If no errors occur, the driver is started during kernel initialization prior to any non-boot drivers being loaded.

1-System-Specifies a driver that loads and starts during kernel initialization after drivers with a Start value of 0 have been started.

2-Auto Load-Specifies a driver or service that is initialized at system startup by Session Manager (Smss.exe) or the Services Controller (Services.exe).

3-On Demand-Specifies a driver or service that the Service Control Manager (SCM) will start only on demand. These drivers have to be started manually by calling a Win32 SCM application programming interface (API), such as the Services snap-in.

4-Disable-Specifies a disabled (not started) driver or service.

5-Delayed Start-Specifies that less-critical services will start shortly after startup to allow the operating system to be responsive to the user sooner. This start type was first introduced in Windows Vista.
