Not following. Is this a very old printer that uses a parallel port. Or a Serial Comm port?

Most printers today are USB attached or they connect on their own to network.

There used to be Parallel Port printer cards for ISA and PCI slots, don't know if one is made for the newer PCIe X1, X4 or X16 slots. The Parallel Port was also known as LPN. It was a 25-pin socket on the computer and the printer cable had a mating 25-pin plug. It's been awhile since I worked with one, usually a Dot-Matrix. Last DM I saw in action was at an Enterprise Car Rental for printing their multi-part contracts. I think I still have an unopened package of 2 IEEE-1284 cables somewhere.

Some DM printers like the Epson LQ 590 can also use USB.

There have been issues with one of the latest Windows updates and not printing, usually USB-connected. The published list I've seen mention Brother, Canon, Panasonic and Ricoh, I've done 2 Brother All-in-Ones and last one was an HP. A typical scenario is that the print job seems to go but is immediately deleted from the print queue as if it had printed but nothing goes to the printer.

If you do have a bad USB port on a Desktop there are PCIe X1 cards available that have 2 to 4 USB ports on them.
