    O/S drive partitioning


    1TB SSD (mbr) with 103 GB in use for the 2004 O/S and 827 GB free.
    A few basic queries, with the object to create a new partition for data, while leaving the O/S with ample room.

    The Win 10 disk management interface lists...

    Total 973 GB
    Available 591 GB
    After shrinking 362 GB

    Why is only 591 GB listed as available, when C:\ properties shows 827 GB free?

    During the shrink process how can the O/S be allocated more space, to accommodate expansion, or is this done automatically? What size is recommended?

    Is the 362 GB available after shrinking wasted space? If not, how is it utilized. Gracias

    Post an image of your disk partitions from disk management.

    The goal...

    1. Increase O/S partition to recommended size, if necessary
    2. Use ALL remaining space for data partition (no unallocated space)

    Can you post again showing all drives and details. Why do you have any other systems you boot as you have so many active paritions and the problem is one is a logical parition

    See above. A guess as to why so many partitions are active is that this is due to the migration of the system through the years - from XP to W2004, and assignment of different operating systems to various drives.

    At one time what is now the J:\ drive was a bootable Window 7 installation. At another W10 was running on what is now the D and E drive.

    The answer to your question is the existence of files that Windows will not move. A third party program such as MiniTool Partition Wizard Free will move those files, allowing you to shrink the OS partition to as small as possible - which you really do not want to do because that will remove free space that Windows likes to use for temporary files.
