    Slow USB Drive File Transfer

    Hello All

Some reason both my most used systems having slow usb drive file transfer, Desktop & Laptop, Desktop is brand new motherboard, processor, and not yet a clean install ((soon will do one soon as i can)), but right now just wanna improve usb drive performance if i can, and not wait 6-7 hours for Macrium reflect backup to finish, like it's doing now on Laptop

Desktop took me 8 hours to transfer 230gb of music from usb 3.1 drive. Any idea why? or how i can speed it up

    Transferring from what to what?

Over a LAN or connected to a system?

    What compression was used?

    Was verify used?

Current driver installed for the device?

Compression Medium for Laptop issue, Verify yes used, Current Driver should be, but i'll double check soon as its done, as always used this usb 3.0 enclosure with Seagate 8tb drive inside. Locally connected

(For Desktop, it appears all drivers current, checked via device manager, and Gigabytes site a few times)

Same as it was yesterday transferring the music folder back to internal drive, took me 8 hours at least lol to do that transfer to the desktop. (also was directly connected then)

I don't get it, used to be faster with my old I7 7700 system, at least never took this long, even Macrium reflect was faster on the Laptop in the past.

    (For Laptop All Drivers Current)
Laptop Macirum storage drive backup finally completed

Unless another Windows 10 Pro 2004 bug lol that still needs to be fixed...

I'm sure you've already checked that it's not plugged in to a USB 2.0 port.

I would check the Policy for the USB drive and see if it's using Quick Removal or Better Perfomance.

You might also benchmark it using CrystalDiskMark -

Will do, and then go from there, and also check if it's on Quick Removal or Better Performance

May do a clean install on the Desktop machine soon, and then fix up the Laptop without a clean install, as that install should still be clean from May 27th

As Desktop found a strange folder in C:\ProgamFiles\Aac Patriot Viper M2 RGB SSD ((problem is i don't own a M.2 SSD yet, so did PC shop test it, did they do an install on there m.2 drive, and transfer my original install to my original drives somehow or what. I might still do a clean install on Desktop soon, just gotta find time, and get all the drivers, and software together

That sounds more like it's running at USB2 speeds. What does it say at the end of the Macrium log regarding write speed? In my examples here Macrium reports more than 1Gb/s on a laptop with a USB3 port, my 5+ hour backup is on a laptop with only USB2 ports. That only manages a little over 200Mb/s. It's the same USB HDD for both.

That 5+ hour machine took the same time to make the Macrium image when running 2004 as it did with 1909.

Well the Ports on the Laptop are Red In Color, believe all USB 3 on that system, and no USB 2.0, but i'll check the log next time on that system.

    Desktop
This PC has a few Blue Ports, and a few black ones, externals always plugged in on Desktop into blue port which should be 3.0 i think

new motherboard in Desktop is Gigabyte B460M_DS3H

Seems about right, with consideration of the hardware.

My last Laptop image using Macrium was 500 GB and that took 10 hours including verification. The one before 530 GB 6½ hours, before that 300 GB 5 hours.

Not very consistant, but it never was, type of content changed as well, which may impact on the compression speed.

I know the limit is the NAS box hardware which is about an 8 year old design, and the cheapest variation, fast in it's day, but of course things have moved on since then.
    I'm on Win 10 1909
Doing a Macrium image is real world, cannot see the point of a synthetic benchmark.

Used to seem to do the Image backups faster, but maybe thats when Drive was mostly empty on the system, not really sure. Guess i'll have to make sure better performance for usb drives at least the externals set on both systems, and go from there

Ok File transfers seem a bit faster now that Better Performance is on with Desktop, will test it also on Laptop tomorrow

*One off topic issue seem to have lately, if i plug too many devices in, then one front port of the front 2.0 ports stop working, mind you bluetooth 5.0 cord from wifi card is plugged into second usb header on board, not sure if RGB is sharing a bit of the bandwidth either lol. Oh well just have to leave gamepad disconnected while doing file transfer, til i get a powered usb hub in future

That suggests to me that a larger-capacity Power Supply in the computer is needed. Another possibility is to use a self-powered USB 3 Hub. Even though USB 3 ports on computers provide more power to devices than USB 2 does there just never seems to be enough, I like to use the PCIe X1 Add-in cards which have a connection directly to the power supply, don't depend upon the motherboard PCIe slots providing power.

As to the orange/red USB ports, I've not seen a Notebook/Laptop with them, usually USB 2 is black and USB 3 is blue and I have a couple with combination 2/3 ports that are black, the embossed 'trident' symbol has SS added. I do have a Gigabyte motherboard that has orange ports.
