You might try running the Windows Troubleshooter on the printer.

    Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot

List of drivers, utilities, and admin software for the WF-3520

    Epson WorkForce WF-3520 | WorkForce Series | All-In-Ones | Printers | Support | Epson US

You might also run their Software Updater and see if there are any firmware updates for the printer, or updates for the Scanner software.

I used to have endless grief with an HP8660 printer. Reloading software often helped but was too much of a PITA.

The solution that finally worked for me was connecting it to the router via Ethernet.

I never had a problem after that.

I want to thank everyone who has replied. I think I may have my problem fixed. I'll wait awhile to see if the problem comes back before I mark this post solved. I did a fresh download of the the scanner driver and software from the Epson site. Then I renamed the twain_32.dll file by adding .old to the end. Next I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to completely delete the Epson Scan Program. I then restarted my desktop and ran the installer to reinstall the driver and software. So far it has been waking up so I may have it solved.

I have a update on my problem. Three days ago I tried to scan a document from my desktop and got the unable to communicate with the scanner error even though I could print with the printer. I then tried to do a manual scan using the flatbed scanner. When I hit the scan button the only option was to scan using the document feeder. I tried everything I could think of but it wouldn't recognize that I had a document on the flatbed scanner. It is very old so I think it's time to retire it to the recycle center. I bought a very inexpensive HP all-n-one from Walmart to use until my new Epson all-n-one comes in from Amazon. I was shocked at some of the delivery times for printers.
