Driver install

Hi all,
As usually, the latest feature update screwed with my Games and my SCSI card.
Games I just reinstall, and the SCSI card I have to install the driver again. This driver is unsigned.
My SCSI card is an AHA 2940 and my driver is listed under
“Storage Controllers / adaptec / adaptec AIC 7870 PCI SCSI Controller (Emulated)”
After clicking on it I get the warning that it is unsigned and click on yes install anyways.
Then I get a confirmation that it has been installed, but in Device Manager it tells me that there is no driver installed.
Normally this works just fine, but it will not now.
What am I missing? I need my scanner back!!

try this:

Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click the Restart button. When your computer restarts you'll see a list of options. Press F7 on your keyboard to select Disable driver signature enforcement. Your computer will now restart and you'll be able to install unsigned drivers

It sounds like you have a driver file that you execute to install the driver.

You could, after disabling driver signature enforcement, try updating the driver in Device Manager.
This assumes, of course, that there is a device listed with the yellow triangle because of no driver.

Just use the manual method (I have a disk) and point it to the driver file.
Might work that way.

I did do this from Device Manager, but the SCSI Controller does not have a yellow triangle, but a "?" does that mean anything?

Use 7z to navigate to the .exe installation file then use the Open Inside option to copy the unpacked files to another folder. Install the driver from Device Manager by choosing the .inf file from the unpacked files above, Once installed you can use this tutorial to block that specific driver from being updated Prevent Windows Update from Updating Specific Device Driver

It means the same thing.
In both cases it means Windows sees a device but can't operate it. The difference is in the "why".

What is the model of your desktop, and roughly how old is it?

The forum prompted you to provide your build number, which is?

What is the exact model of the SCSI card? There are references to that number from 1994 to 2018. About how old is it?

dalchina,
when i boot up i see that the card is AHA 2940 by Adaptec, Latest Feature update is 2004 .
it is old, how old, I don't know. it originally came with a driver for windows XP. when i upgraded to win 7 i had to find a driver that works and i found AIC 7870 PCI SCSI Controller (Emulated) clicked on the .INF file and chose install. the driver also works with win 10. I know that because it worked till the update to 2004. My desktop is a no name came with win 7, free upgrade to 10 and later clean install of 10. all worked fine till now.
Any Ideas?

PS. the strange thin is that windows confirms that it is installed, but device manager tells me no driver installed

Start from the premise that with old hardware there is absolutely no guarantee that what works with one build of Windows will continue to work with the next. Using old hardware not designed for Win 10 becomes your responsibility.

For example, I have a scanner- it works perfectly with Win 7. There is no chance of it working with Win 10. I use a virtual machine running Windows XP and use it with that.

I assume, given that you had it working previously and that it installs, this is not a problem of trying to run a 16 bit program on a 64 bit system.

You could try installing it in compatibility mode.

Another possibility is to try using a Driver Updater program (normally definitely not recommended) such as Driver Booster or DriverMax. Ignore everything but any reference to your Adaptec card.
