Brother Laser Thinks it's a Brother InkJet

For some odd reason, when I send a print job to my Brother Laser MFC-2710DW, instead the document goes to my Brother MFC-J6920DW Inkjet printer.

I know I can reinstall it, but printer installation on Windows 10 is a chore and a half! Besides, I want to know why this has happened.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners

See if Let Windows manage my default printer is checked.

If it's checked, you might uncheck it.

I would run the Windows Troubleshooter on the printers as well.

    Wynona,

Might running the Brother printer Network Connection Repair Tool or Wireless Setup Helper help?
Both utilities are the same versions for both your printers.

These links were in the Utilities section of
    Downloads | MFC-L2710DW | United Kingdom | Brother
    Downloads | MFC-J6920DW | United Kingdom | Brother
[These webpages each have a selector so you can choose the US version pages instead but I would not expect them to be any different]

The Laser MFC-L2710DW is set as the default printer; however, when I try to print with it, the Inkjet MFC-J6920DW prints instead.

So far, nothing I've done has worked.

    How are they connected?
How are you choosing which printer to use?
Are they both misdirecting or is sending to the InkJet working correctly?
What did those Brother utilities tell you?

Also make note of the program's File, Print. Regardless of the Default set in Devices and Printers most programs can over-ride that, especially with documents that have previously been printed.

I ran both the Network Connection Repair Tool and the Wireless Setup Helper to no avail, Denis. I've also run the Brother Uninstall Tool on both printers, shut both down and unplugged them both. I plugged in, powered on, and ran the full setup on the 2710, but still no joy. The 6920 was left off and unplugged during installation of the 2710.

This is a dual boot system, and I have both 2004 and Build 20161 Insider Preview partitions. When I boot into Build 20161, the 2710 works flawlessly, but when booted into 2004, no joy.

I think it might be Brother's driver installer, which shows as Y17C_C1_ULWL_PP-usa-inst-E2. This doesn't act like previous Brother installations; when I reinstalled the 6920, I was directed to use the printer cable temporarily; however, the 2710 installation has never directed me to use the printer cable.

I would suggest posting in the Brother printer forum.

Your odds of getting a solution on the issues with those specific printers are probably greater there.

So the symptom is, on Version 2004 only, when you print to Brother Laser MFC-2710DW the document goes to the Brother MFC-J6920DW Inkjet instead.

What happens if you print a test page using Control panel, Devices & printers, [right-click] Printer properties, Print test page?

    What happened on Version 1909?

I've had wifi network printers ask me to connect through a cable for installation or reinstallation sometimes but not always. It is not necessarily significant.

    Wynona,

The latest version is F1. Install that.
