    Win 10 v2004 & HP Device Drivers

I've got a relatively new HP laptop that became very erratic after the upgrade to Win 10 v2004. It appears to be a device driver problem.

HP Support hasn't posted updated drivers for Win 10 v2004. Just about all of the drivers they do have posted are specified for ether Win 10 v1903 or v1909. Also, these drivers won't install on a v2004 system.

HP Support can't say when the new drivers will be posted, other than it could be months from now. HP Support never cautioned about updating to v2004. The Intel High Definition Audio device can't find any driver under v2004.

Is this typical for other hardware manufactures? I think it's outrageous that HP Support can't keep up with Microsoft Updates.

Not every driver needs to be updated.

I tested 2004 for a few days when it first came out, and never had a driver issue.

I rolled back to 1909 until the list of issues gets a bit shorter. We're in no hurry.

I would start looking in the Windows Event Logs for errors in the timeframe that you're experiencing the "erratic" behavior.

Did you force the update since there is no sign of 2004 on my 9 month old HP ProBook 450 G6?

No, I didn't force the update. It was presented by Windows Update on 27 May 2020.

Yes, typically not every driver needs to be updated, but apparently some do for Win 10 v2004 on an HP Spectre laptop, and HP Support hasn't responded yet.

In the case of HP, they need to update most if not all of their drivers, because their drivers are written to not install unless you have the drivers for that particular version of Windows 10. So, if you're running v2004 and suspect you need to reload a driver, HP Support doesn't have any v2004 device drivers posted yet.

My laptop was acting as if it was infected with a very malicious virus. I was able to stabilize the system by disabling all drivers for the touch pad, touch screen, and pen.

It seems absurd that HP Support hasn't posted updated device drivers yet and that they can't say when they'll have the device drivers available for computers under warranty.

So it sounds like roll back to 1909 and wait, or live with it.

Sometimes, the Microsoft drivers work just as well.

Conexant, Intel, Synaptics, and RealTek are mentioned as working with Microsoft in the 2004 Known Issues list.

    1) There is an option to rollback using windows.old.
This option typically disappears after 10 days.

    2) What computer problems are you currently having?

    3) How were you able to determine that there is a problematic driver?

    4) What work up was done?

To roll back to 1909 requires a clean install of the OS which is a big hassle. HP Support could have the v2004 device drivers posted any day.

I can live with the disabled touch pad, touch screen and pen for now. I'm using a HP Spectre wireless mouse.

Apparently, Intel and Synaptics need new v2004 device drivers on my machine.

I'm not sure what audio devices are installed on my laptop, but the RealTek driver appears to be installed, and the Intel High Definition Audio device can't find a suitable device driver.

Main reason I do a disk image before an upgrade.

I may find something after the 10-day rollback period.

Doing incremental backups of volatile data on daily basis insures that at most, I might lose a day's worth of data on a restore.

    1. The problems appeared after 10 days, so the easy roll back isn't an option now.

    2. I was having a very erratic mouse cursor that was behaving as if my system was infected. I essentially had no control of the mouse cursor and the cursor was acting on its own to do everything.

    3. I resolved the erratic mouse cursor by disabling all the drivers for the touch pad, touch screen and pen in Device Manager.

    4. HP Support had me uninstall the 4 device drivers under "Audio, Video, and Game Controllers" in Device Manager and let the system reinstall. This effort didn't resolve anything. Three of the devices reinstalled the drivers, but the Intel High Definition Audio device couldn't find a driver and is now appearing under "Other Devices" as a device without a driver.

Had you attempted a system restore?
    System Restore Windows 10

    1) Open administrative Powershell and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    5) sfc /scannow
    6) chkdsk /scan
    7) get-computerrestorepoint
    8) get-computerrestorepoint -laststatus

    9) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
