Saying 5TB disk is using MBR partition table.

Currently EaseUS Partition Master Pro 14.0 is scanning the 5TB drive to see what it can find regarding missing partitions. Still showing up as 561GB however ...

5TB drive only showing as 561.53GB-partition-master-pro-scan.jpg

Disk 0 is the 240GB SSD (with Win 10 Pro)

Disk 1 is a 16GB USB Stick (with all sorts of downloaded programs on - eg disk utilities)

Disk 2 is the problematic 5TB Toshiba HDD attached to the PC via a USB interface.

I'm guessing I still need to go into BIOS and see what settings the HDD Access Mode is set to.

The BIOS didn't have AHCI set (as far as I can remember) when the drive worked before so I'm curious as to why changing it to AHCI should now make it work? Can someone explain please?

If you have AOMEI Partition Assistant or Partition Wizard 12, post a screenshot how your disks look in it. It will show whether your disk is MBR or GBT.

Thaks for you help so far.

The disk is formatted using the MBR scheme.

I'm currently running a scan for missing partitions using EaseUS Partition Master Pro 14.0 (see post #13 this thread). It is now at 38% through.

Referring back to your previous post, how do you think I may be able to recover/reset the 5TB drive back to full capacity?

The Partition Management programs are only showing 1 x 561GB partition and no means to extend it.

Would formatting with a Partition Management program reclaim the space or do I have to 'fix' the BCD Store somehow?

I have also downloaded the tools from the Toshiba website for this drive although I've not yet run the app.

"Disk 2 is the problematic 5TB Toshiba HDD attached to the PC via a USB interface."
Usually these high capacity drives come as external drives and as I said already in such external enclosures the SATA to USB bridge circuit has a special drive Translation circuit in it that does *8 and /8 to be an MBR drive

Sofar we have been thinking it is an internal system drive that is replaced with an SSD system drive with Windows 10.. Now only you are telling that it is connected through USB interface.

You cannot connect a AF HDD through USB without the drive translation circuit in the USB interface. if done it will only see the (total capacity/8) and say corrupt file system/RAW

It now looks like it was originally in its own enclosure with the drive translation circuit and taken out of it subsequently. I very much doubt that it was an internal system drive. May be you have forgotten the history of the drive.

Whatever, you need to connect it internally only and format it as GPT. You will get full 5TB.

    No two ways.

@ArthurDent - Is this true? No wonder the RAW.

As will Partition Master, so no worries.

    Hi,

The disk is exactly as supplied by Amazon - it didn't come as an external drive in an enclosure nor did it have any instructions to say that is how it was to be used. Amazon ASIN Number: B013J7QNT2 or link: Toshiba X300 5TB 7200RPM 128MB 3.5" SATA HDD (HDWE150EZSTA): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

5TB drive only showing as 561.53GB-5tb-toshiba-hdd-amazon.jpg

The 5TB drive was used as the Syetem Disk after I had cloned the Windows 7 installation from a smaller HDD onto it.

It functioned fine as the Windows System Disk for four months, until Thursday last week when I got the "Boot Selection Failed" message in Windows Boot Manager - error code 0xc000000e.

When fitted into the PC (along with the new Win 10 SSD) - all Windows can see is 561GB in a single partition, and no 'free space' into which to extend the partition.

It is only attached as an external USB drive to stop me continually swapping cables around inside the PC.

I have the original box that the drive came in and will post that in this thread shortly.

It has never - until this last couple of days - been attached to the PC as an external drive.

So, when you said, quote "Sofar we have been thinking it is an internal system drive that is replaced with an SSD system drive with Windows 10.." you were correct - it was the only hard disk connected to the motherboard internally. The disk had Windows 7 HP SP1 (which was a clone of the OEM's original HDD) and worked fine from mid-February when I bought the drive until last Thursday (25 June).

No, sorry, I haven't. The drive was purchased mid-February when I started to toy with the idea of moving to Linux with the End-of-Life support for Windows 7.

    No, not correct.

Everything worked fine with this disk as the only disk in the PC until Thursday this last week when I got an error message.

I took it out of the PC and attached it as an external USB device so that I could swap cables etc over without delving repeatedly into the innards of the PC.

When fitted internally as the only drive, it won't boot. When fitted alongside a bootable drive, it shows up in Disk Management as only 561Gb.

    Hello Arthur -

In the meantime, please continue to follow the rest of Post #17 and use #19 - only if needed.

Worth a shot. Up to you. It can't hurt to give it a go.

    Hi @ArthurDent,

The picture you posted in post#15 clearly showed the drive as AF and all my rantings are based on it
. ( I had seen the amazon listing earlier also and it does not show it as an AF drive. If it is not an AF drive it can only a 5TB drive initialised and formatted as GPT)

Now that you confirm that it was a system drive, I shall shut my mouth
and watch. It will be an interesting learning experience if your efforts succeed. Good Luck.

[ We had a case here where the the interface circuit in a 3TB external drive had failed. The OP took out the HDD and connected it as an internal drive to retrieve the data in it. "
Hard Drive seems corrupt. 1 Partition now showing as 3 Partitions?"

He was asked to use TestDisk and change the sector size to 4096. He was then able to see all the files and copy it to another drive. It was software drive translation with TestDisk in place of the missing hardware drive translation (in the enclosure) that enabled him to retrieve all data.]

    Hi Jumanji

Please don't take offence, if my post came across that way, I apologize.

The retail box it came in, both front and rear shown below, makes no mention of it being an 'AF' drive, indeeed the label on the bottom of the box (also shown below) clearly says 'Internal Hard Drive'.

    Front (below):

5TB drive only showing as 561.53GB-x300-box.jpg

    Rear (below):

5TB drive only showing as 561.53GB-x300-back-box.jpg

    Bottom (below):

5TB drive only showing as 561.53GB-x300-bottom-box.jpg

No mention, as you can see, of it being 'AF' drive and clearly labelled 'Internal Hard Drive'.

A couple of things to try:

See if Partition Master can format the whole drive as a GPT Partition and to try the Toshiba Tools on it.

If they fail, an email to Toshiba CS/Tech Support to see if they can suggest how to format this drive so that I see the full capacity I've paid for.

If they fail, I guess it goes back to the seller as a faulty unit.
