A disk that lists as RAW indicates a missing or corrupted File Table, which can be also read as uninitialized.
I suggest that you do a full disk scan on the drive. If a bad sector is in the area of the disk where the file table is then this could cause this problem.
You could also use the Diskpart Clean All command. This will write all zeros to the drive. (A 5TB will take a very long time).

Hi @ArthurDent,
The picture of the Toshiba drive in your post #15, carries The AF logo. AF = Advance formatted, where to read large capacity drives in the bygone XP /Win7 era ( no GPT), eight 512 byte sectors are combined to present one logical sector of 4096 bytes size. These drives are formatted as MBR drives and usually come as External drives where the SATA to usb bridge contains a Drive Translation circuit to combine 8X512 bytes into one 4096bytes sector while writing into the drive. While reading the reverse process takes place wherein the data coming from one 4096 byte sector is reconverted to make it look like it is coming from eight 512 byte sectors..
If it is formatted as a GPT drive, please use Partition Wizard 12 or even AOMEI Partition Assistant and format it as an MBR drive / convert GPT to MBR.
(561.53 * 8 = 4492.24GB = 5TB) Your drive seems to be reading 8 sectors as one sector. Drive translation seems to be missing to reconvert one 4096 byte logical sector into eight 512 byte physical sectors.
From Gigabyte site I found this two drivers to your MB

Okay. So yesterday (when this problem surfaced) I tried all sorts of things including re-partitioning and re-formatting the drive (to no avail). So, the data on the drive has gone.
See above reply.
Okay. I read this and it *sort* of makes sense, certainly 561GB is approx 1/8 of the formatted capacity of a 5TB drive.
Not sure how to use the above information.
I asked one of the partition management programs (can't remember which - I tried 3 yesterday) to convert the disk to GPT. How can I find out whether the disk is formatted according to MBR of GPT - through Disk Management?
Thanks
Will now try various "solutions" and report back.
Many thanks for all those folks offering help and suggestions - it is much appreciated!
