External HDD not showing in Explorer

    Hi.
I had a problem with my external drive not showing in Windows Explorer.
I went into Disk Management and Formatted the drive in there and assigned a drive letter - now it is showing in Explorer.

The problem I now have though is that when I try and plug the external drive into another PC, it is not showing up in Explorer again.
Surely I won't have to go into disk management for every PC I plug this device into, wouldn't windows auto-detect the drive?

    Hope you can help.

    Chris

Drive letter assignment should be automatic. With no intervention it would be the next one available.

Assigning a letter to a drive means that, assuming that letter is available next time, the same letter will be assigned to that drive unless in the meantime that letter has been assigned to a different drive.

    Dodgy connection or caddy?

Try installing and running Hard Disk Sentinel and see what it says about it.

I have tried using another cable and the same occurs, the drive is a Sandisk Extreme 250GB SSD.

I have installed Hard Disk Sentinel and it states that the drive is perfect with 100% performance and health, not sure if there are any settings in here that I have to change

Many possibilities - there's plenty on the net if you search for
external drive not seen in explorer

    e.g.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...-explorer-view

Do you have the same issue with other drives if you have any?

What sort of drive is it? An internal drive you've put in a caddy- a flash drive- SSD- HDD- purpose made external USB drive...?

You may have a drive issue as it did once not "show" in explorer.

Did you ever used Rufus on it?
Did you checked if it's a MBR or GPT?

I would use diskpart to convert it to MBR, clean, format and assign.
