    Keyboard & Mouse Freezing~Requires Hard Reboot~Windows 10

I have two older gaming computers that have been upgraded with solid state hard drives and I wanted to go to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Installs when well, only a few minor problems. But on using both computers I have run into the same problem. Randomly, the mouse and keyboard will freeze on both computers. Even the power button will not reboot the computers, rebooting requires unplugging and re-plugging the power cord.

Really don't think it's a hardware problem since both computers are different manufacturers, hardware and configuration. Anyone have any ideas/solutions?

    Thanks,

Hi Big Rock. Welcome to TenForums @Big Rock

You say your mouse and keyboard lock up, does your computer remain responsive to insertion of USB devices, do you hear the sound. If you use USB key does autorun ask you what to do or does file manager open.

Trying to determine is this Windows locking up and you see it as keyboard or is it just keyboard & mouse that are gone.

You mention putting solid states in computers. Was this done to both just before the upgrades to 10 or was this done some time ago? I think from reading it it was done before.

If you go into device manager and expand the mouse and keyboards sections, then show hidden devices do you have any?

If so can you delete these hidden entries.

Not sure how often this happens but if really frequent or quite frequent you could do a clean boot (not install) and see if it occurs.

    Hi Ken,
Thanks for the response. Yes, the hard drives were upgraded before w/ Windows 7. The computer I'm running now has a Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU processor, 870 @2.93 GHz and 8.00 GB installed ram (forgot to add that info). Never had a freeze issue when I was running Windows 7.
That said, I recollect that the freezes only happen when I'm on the internet. I'm now running Microsoft Edge and the freezes seem to occur when I'm going to multiple web sites and have a number of tabs running. So, any possible connection?
    Thanks,
    Gary

So did you find hidden devices?

So does your computer freeze or are you just loosing inputs ?

    What AV's are you running?

Yes, did find some hidden devices, haven't got around to deleting them.

Computer completely freezes, can't input anything, even the start button doesn't work.

Don't have any audiovisuals on either computer

Check your Bios on both machines and the firmware on SSD's.

Don't update firmware on SSD's without a complete SSD image to restore from.

Have finally found the time to delete the hidden devises, mostly really old drivers. Also went thru the other devises and found some duplicates and other greyed devises (indicate not present?). Should I go thru and delete the duplicates and greyed out devises?

I wouldn't do any mass deletes unless you have an Image to restore from.

Some devices maybe valid, just not connected.

What adapter categories are also showing devices. Disk drives can be lots of USB keys over the years.

Just had another lockup. Had to do a hard reboot. I was in Devise Manager, was trying to an find examples of the greyed out items when everything froze. Guess my theory about the freezes being related to Edge isn't valid.
