D: Drive Suddenly Disappeared

Hey everyone, it seems I run to some sort of a sudden problem. I'd appreciate your help!

So, after some sort of Windows 10 crash, I had to restart my PC. However, I randomly noticed that my D: drive is missing! I have two drives, the C: drive which has all the drivers as well as my important documents and my Windows 10 installation and the D: drive which has other software and games.

So, I tried to check for a Windows 10 update, any driver update that could help, but there was nothing new for an update. I also restarted my PC, but that didn't help either.

I headed to Disk Manager, in the control panel and I scanned for new drives. Windows 10 recognized another drive (Drive 0) which is my D: drive, but it's not initialized. When I tried to initialize it, it popped up an error message, saying "The action could not be performed due to i/o device error.".

I also tried to use the control panel (as admin) and used the "chkdsk D: /f /r /x" line, but it said, "Cannot open volume for direct access.".

I have some important software in that drive, so I'd like not to completely format it since redownloading it would take some time and I need these things for my projects and exams these days at the university. Also, my recovery image is too old and it's only for the C: drive, so it can't help.

PS: My Windows 10 version is 1909.

First job swap the disk ports and cable I put c on the port and cable of d and d on c this will rule out bad port and cable. C is normally on port 0 if nothing changes you need to get free partition recovery software as it's the partition that's gone recover that and files will be there

Everything works now! So, the problem was that the HDD's cable was disconnected by 1 millimeter or something like that. I opened the Desktop, tried to see if the cable was properly placed (I didn't change any ports just yet) and I turned the PC on. And everything works just fine now.
@Samuria Really thanks! I should have checked the cables right after the problem showed up, I guess I forgot.

The problem is back. Pushing the cables or changing them fixes the problem, but if something goes wrong with Windows, the problem is back. I kinda think my Windows installation is completely meshed up... Lots of problems today, like windows apps not opening, the PC can't shut down or restart at times without freezing in the shut down/restart screen, reading the HDD but not having it installed, etc.

I want to avoid completely having to format, but I'd like to know if there's another way to fix such issues.

It's a home build.

So, these faulty cables could be the problem? I used to have a problem in the past like that. Moving the cables seemed to fix it for a while. I changed all cables though since then (similar problems).

I also have the problem where everything shuts down but the tower is still on. I changed PSU but still the same problem.

It doesn't even let me go to the advanced startup screen, it's just a black screen. Also, many Windows settings see errors.

Oh, it just came to me. I think the HDD cables haven't changed since 3 years ago, when I built my PC. Maybe they're faulty? One HDD seem to be 100% loaded (performance wise, not space wise) and the other one disappears...

Time for 2 new cables make sure to keep cables away from any noise as that can effect it

I fixed it again by pulling out the cables and putting them back in. I think it's indeed time for 2 new cables.

I'll buy it tomorrow and I'll tell you guys how it went.

There are cables that connect the HDD with the mobo and cables that connect the HDD with the PSU. I guess I should just change the cables that connect the HDD with the PSU, right?

No data cables to mb

Sorry, I didn't get the last one. Should I change the cables that connect to the mobo? Or every cable connected to the HDD (mobo and PSU cables)?
