Hi, upgrade to which build number please? The forum prompted you to specify this when you wrote your post.

    And from which build?
And which is your PC model exactly?

Note that some users experienced sound loss upgrading to 1903 (see first comment after main text)
Known and Resolved issues for Windows 10 May 2019 Update version 1903

You might be referring to build 2004 (latest).

What do you see if you rt click the Volume icon, click Troubleshoot?
    Post a screenshot thus:
    Sound-screenshot.png

What happens if you click Test - do the bars on the right move? And do you hear anything?
    Sound-untitled.png

Is the correct default device selected there? (white tick on green).

Is anything muted? - see your volume mixer.

    How are your speakers connected?

If you use headphones directly connected, do you hear anything?

Not sure I can answer all your questions, I have Microsoft Win10 Home, version 10.0.18363, built 18363, my PC is a HP touchsmart 520, and when I go to the speaker icon is says 'No Audio Output Devive is installed' if I click on that it goes to 'Detecting Problems' 'checking audio device driver'then another window with 'Apply this fix' or Skip this fix' I click the top one, it then says , 'Restart' we've made some changes' but after a restart it is still the same.

HP touchsmart 520 - seems to be from around 2011- is that correct?
If so, there's no guarantee of it being compatible with Win 10, and if it works with one build of Win 10, no guarantee of it being compatible with the next. By upgrading, you take responsibility for resolving issues on using it effectively outt of spec.

I believe HPs policy is to withdraw drivers for older models.

    1.
What do you see if you rt click the Volume icon, click Troubleshoot?
    Post a screenshot
(of the result of running the troubleshooter)

A screenshot is a picture: this is mine: yours will differ. I want to see what problems it lists.

    2. Now open your Device Manager and post a screenshot like this:

    3. Important: I asked from which build you upgraded your PC- as it was previously working. Did you mean from a previous build of Win 10? Or maybe Win even from 7?
    just upgraded my Win10
    4. Again, what is your current build?
    Win key + r, winver

Interesting- I was hoping for a missing driver. But maybe you have an unsuitable version for your PC.

    See:
    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c01950055
    and expand the +'s

    - from your original error
No Audio Output Device is installed

So my guess is that you need to do some work to try to find a more appropriate driver.

For example, if you upgraded, you can 'go back to the previous build' for 10 days.
You can then recover the driver (guessing which one it is though- there's the uncertainty.

Or you can hope- and try seachcing for one, driver updaters and just hope to be lucky- unless you have an old driver disk that came with the PC.

You could just 'Go back to the previous build' and stay with that. You have 10 days from when you upgraded by default.

Remember- this is rather the consequence of working in uncharted territory.

Again: 3. Important: I asked from which build you upgraded your PC- as it was previously working. Did you mean from a previous build of Win 10? Or maybe Win even from 7?

I am gratful for your help, but it is all to complicated for me to do, I went from Win7 to the Win10 I have now, a few months ago and all was well, sound all OK, the sound has only just gone when I did this upgrade the other day, I lost my Office program also Irvanview, and all my Thunderbird mail , but with a bit of outside help I got them all back, but at the time was not to worried about sound, thought it might come back on it's own,
but every now and again I might want to see a you-tube and can't hear it, I might have to get someone in to do it, it can't be much because it was there before this upgrade,
    thanks again.

Remember, this is the consequence of trying to put software on an out of date machine. You have a route back if you upgraded from one build of Win 10 to the current one.

I've pointed to the solution and you have a build you can go back to. Then disable Windows Update.

Sadly people just think they can keep on running newer an newer software on old PCs and think it will always be compatible. Far better to stay with what works.

And the way to protect yourself and give yourself a way to always get back to a previous good state- even if your disk fails- is to use disk imaging routinely and regularly. This advice is given many times a day here. E.g. Macrium Reflect FREE.
