Does your Disk Management show the ODD? Does the BIOS show it?

Nice to see that i am not the only one with this problem in the world same has happened to me when i updated my laptop dell inspiron 7720SE to Win10 V19041 the disc is reading but when i insert a new disc it says "windows cannot read the disc in drive" and no option available for format

device status: the device is working properly
checked in bios: TSSTcorp DVD+-RW SN-208BB is showing
device manager: the driver is upto date

tried everything following youtube videos like going to regedit and adding folder Controller0, but still the same.

I have been having the same issue with a newer Dell Desktop (It's a newer computer, sorry I dont have the model right now). Users report it was working fine until recently, but now the format menu won't come up when a blank DVD or Blu-Ray are inserted (didnt check cd's). However, it will read disks that have data on them. There haven't been any updates to the system recently (it's off the Internet for security reasons) and users report they haven't made any driver changes. I've double checked the driver with an identical working computer and its the same.

My initial guess is the drive may have failed but since it reads probably not. I just want to check with you folks to see if there are any registry entries that may have been changed that would create this behavior, or if there are other settings that would cause this?

Let me know if you need model's for the desktop and drive, I can get them tomorrow (01/21/22).

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions you can provide!

The problem is usually one or a combination of the following:

    1. Optics in drive need cleaning.
    2. Old stocks of Writable/re-writable discs deteriorating over the years.

    Option 1.
Always needs checking maybe once a year. The laptop type of drive where the optics comes out in the disc tray are easiest to clean/check. A LED torch at a low angle to the optics surface and magnifying glass job.

    Option 2.
Deteriorating old discs. The dye layer does loose functionality. If the ATIP info or writing strategy is not read from the disc then the Burning application will not work.

Another possibility is a driver modifier which may have been installed by an application having it's own burning functionality. Incompatible with one of the Windows updates maybe a year or two back.
