A question about connecting a device using a USB cable Windows 10

    Hello,

I use my android phone to provide a Internet connection for my Dell laptop using a USB cable. In the image below the MTP device is my cell phone. When I am ready to disconnect my phone, I right click on the image, and it gives me the options of removing the device, or ejecting it. What is the difference between the two options?

    Thank you

removing it is removing it from the computer - uninstalling it
ejecting it is another word for safely remove - but it is shown as eject as the computer is as you can see recognising it as an optical device - eg dvd etc
In the notifications area on the desktop lower right - taskbar nest to connection icon you will see an arrow, if you click that and then click the usb icon you will see or should do the safely remove the - cell phone.
It is like stopping a usb flash pen before you remove.
the same principle as unmount the microSD card in a phone.

Alternatively you simply shut down the computer and then remove the phone.

    Cheers
    You are welcome
Do you have safely remove on notifications
Best way unless you actually need the phone whilst the computer is on is to shut down and them remove

Check your phone maker's website for a Windows 10 driver, possibly described as a Windows 10 USB driver. You install this on the computer not the phone.
    - For HTC, I think the driver was in an obvious place within the website support section.
    - For Samsung, I think I had to ask them where I could find the driver.

It will let Windows 10 detect it properly [it might call it a phone, it might call it a portable media player].
    - It will have a decent icon in Devices & printers and in File explorer. Device manager will probably identify it as a mobile phone.
    - You will not have or need an Eject command, you just disconnect it when you know you are not transferring any data.
    - It might have other benefits such as better speed for all I know, I've always just done it straightaway for any new phone so I don't know.

Added 20200910 - I've worked on & improved this recommendation at MyPhoneExplorer links Windows computers and Andoid phones reliably - TenForums

And if you are interested in transferring data between your phone & your computer, consider FJSoft's MyPhoneExplorer.

Whether the devices are linked by USB, Bluetooth, WiFi network or the phone's WiFi hotspot, MyPhoneExplorer links them reliably and it contains highly customisable synchronisation tools.
    - Info links - FJ Software Development and user forum MPE Forum - English section
    - Download link Download MyPhoneExplorer

I have been using it for eight years now and I think it is excellent.
    - I use it to sync [MS Office] Outlook Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes to the phone. I could sync both ways but I choose not to.
    - I use it to move the phone's photos & screenshots to the computer.
    - I also use it to copy chosen files to the phone and other chosen files from the phone.
    - All these operations are defined in advance & saved within the application so I can just tell it to get on with the job whenever I want.

"Eject" is absent from my Android phone, possibly due to metered connection.
