So it sounds like you got Macrium running. That is a good go forward position. Some Windows installations once corrupted are gone with hours of diagnosing and trial and error.

Did you create and test Macrium's rescue media?

This is an absolute must. When you boot from rescue media have your backup Image connected. You are really testing that the boot works and that you can see the files to restore from.

    Hi,

I had an SSD that was marked as needing checking & nothing I did would clear the fault. In the end I used Easeus Partion Master (Purchased) to check File System & it found a "Blank area marked as used" it cleared the error & all good now.

I don't think the OP issue is that chkdsk is starting at boot, at least that is not how I read it.

No, chkdsk isn't starting at boot. After the Asus boot screen it goes straight into windows automatic repair mode. I can run all of the utilities in there but nothing changes the boot to automatic repair. I've run chkdsk through cmd prompt. It finds nothing wrong. I will give partition manager a go. I assume I can run it on the ssd in question through my new windows install. If it finds a problem then I'll retry windows through that ssd and see what happens.

I didn't think chkdsk was running. Thanks for confirming.

I tried Partition Manager. It didn't fix the problem.

I'll work through the tutorial Compumind when I get a chance today.

Again thank you all for your suggestions. Greatly appreciated.
