SSD with windows comes up with auto repair loop but the disk is good

    Hi;
I posted yesterday about a Windows automatic repair loop but didn't receive any answers so went ahead and reinstalled windows. I could not find a fix, even trying the reg edit and making a windows repair disk didn't help. Everything just went back to the automatic repair loop.
The new install works fine. I then connected the SSD that has the automatic repair problem and all my info and files are there and accessible. I the tried to boot from the original install and surprise, surprise still auto repair loop.

My first question is, can I save that windows install and use it again?
Second question is does anyone know why the disk is fine but the windows install is cactus?

    Windows version 10.0 10240

    Cheers

    Welcome to the forum @RealZeal

The fact that the data looks good does not mean a critical file within the Windows boot process is not corrupt.

Can you use this Windows, maybe, but I doubt it.

If you can get to the Advance Startup Options you could try uninstalling the last update. Power on, see dots, power off with power button (holding button until it dies). Power on, see the dots, power off again holding button.

Power on third time, let it process. Hopefully it will start Advance Startup Options. Then select "Troubleshoot", Advance options and one of the options that should appear is Uninstall latest update.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

What I recommend you do is start imaging your system. The software is free. Instead of reinstalling windows from scratch you would restore from the point in time you want to go back to.

I have my Windows and programs in one partition and I "Image" this partition weekly and I keep several version. Lots of tools out there but I recommend Macrium. (Use by a very large number of members)

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

When windows starts it writes a dirty bit to the disk when its shut down it clear it. I fit doesnt get cleared it will check the drive and continue trying to check until the dirty bit is cleared once chkdsk has run it will clear the bit

Thank you guys for the reply, greatly appreciated.
No go with any of it unfortunately.

Samuria - Ran chkdsk a number of times. It found nothing and still wont boot.
Ken - I could get to the advanced setup with the automatic repair loop. Possibly I didn't explain that very well. Repair loop would run then give me the normal repair options. I tried them all; remove latest update, restore point, safe mode, nothing worked. I haven't gone back and tried it since I've got windows back up.

I'm taking your advice and trying to use Macrium. The install of the program has changed from the tutorial and the program isn't very self explanatory or maybe it's just me. I'll keep persevering.

    cheers guys

When the computer is powered on now what do you see and hear?

If I power on with the old windows install?

I get my asus boot screen, then the normal white circle at the bottom of the screen. The screen goes blank and then the asus boot screen appears with automatic repair tool at the bottom. It then boots to the repair page options, which are all selectable/useable. I'm just running a Macrium backup at the moment so can't give you screenshots.

What steps did you make to be able to use Macrium?

    These are some options:
    a) backup files > clean install
    b) custom install
    c) troubleshoot

I'm running Macrium on a brand new install of windows 10. I used a spare SSD to install a new version of windows. I still have the old windows install on the old SSD. I was just hoping to be able to get that one running again.
