I have a problem with my keyboard

    Dear All,

I am new to ten forums.

    Hello.

I have a problem with my keyboard. When I type with it I can enter about 8 or nine characters (sometimes more) and no more at all UNTIL I move the mouse to end of the text I just typed and left click then the cursor appears.

At that point I can carry on typing for another 10 characters or so and I have to repeat the process.

I had this problem in Windows 10 for a long time now.

I can't seem to get rid of it.

Running Linux OSes on this amd 64 kaveri box seems to abolish the problem.

I have had to perform the mouse cursor click fix several times now to type this email.

I noticed that if I logout and log back in again as administrator in Windows 10 the problem goes away.

Suggestions on a fix for this would be appreciated.

It doesn't help if you change to a different kind of keyboard.

    Cheers

    Michael Fothergill.

    Welcome to Ten Forums Mike.

That doesn't sound like the keyboard is at fault. It sounds like something is taking focus away from the window that you are typing in (which was your browser when you were typing this post).

You can easily demonstrate this effect. Open Notepad so you have something to type into. Type a few characters, your cursor should be showing at the end of your typing. Now click on an empty part of the Taskbar. This switches the focus from Notepad to the Taskbar and the cursor disappears. You can no longer type in Notepad because what you type is being sent to whatever has focus, the taskbar in this case (and that just ignores what you type).

You can confirm that losing focus is you problem by typing until it stops accepting your input. Then, instead of clicking precisely at the end of your text, just click on the title bar of the window you were typing in. This returns focus to that window and the cursor should reappear.

Now comes the tricky part, finding out what is stealing focus from your window. It could be something as simple as a careless click somewhere outside the window you were working in. That's particularly easy to do by accident if you use a touchpad.

It could be a faulty mouse that's giving rogue clicks unasked for (or a touchpad that over-sensitive).

Or it could even be be some errant process running in the background that's grabbing the focus.

If logging into another Admin account makes the problem go away, Then your User profile may be corrupted.

True, but logging into another account would also have its own personal mouse sensitivity settings (probably set to the defaults). The problem account may not be corrupted, it may just need its mouse/touchpad sensitivity settings adjusted.

    Many thanks for your responses.

I don't think the cursor is moving to another window in some way as to cause a problem for me. For example, if I open a browser window and then resize it to take up the entire screen area and then go to google search and then click on the icon at the top right that shows a variety of google apps then if you click on gmail and then the login screen appears right in the middle of the screen then when I enter the username and in particular the password, the problem occurs. You have to do the mouse click or you can't enter the entire password and you can't log in.

I looked at the user corruption fix. There seems to be quite a few steps in that but I will try it out and see if it helps.

If it can't be fixed then I have got ssh to fall back on.

I have got it working between the other machines I use and I got the Windows ssh utility working as well as both client and server.

This means I can work on word processor documents etc in libreoffice in linux and then copy them over to the Windows environment to use MS Office to fix things up that I need to send to people mostly using mouse clicks from that point on and not so much keyboard input.

That would reduce the nuisance factor here.

The problem used go away periodically between different windows updates.

It was as if something cured the problem for a time and then something else was installed that brought it back again.

Now it seems to be permanently resident.

The big update in Windows has not occurred for me yet here.

When it does I am hoping it might get rid of it for some mysterious reason or other.

That would be nice if it would occur.

I will let you know how I get on with this problem.

    Regards

    MF

What is the make/model of your Keyboard? I ask because using linux you don't have this problem but only occurs in windows. This leads me to believe it's a driver issue on the widows side.

Have you attempted using this admin login for an extended period in order to confirm the fault doesn't reappear?

    I'm also curious to know, are you logging in using a user with Admin privileges or using the default Administrator covered in this tutorial;

Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10

Many thanks for your help and advice.

I have used two keyboards with this machine. Once is a DELL keyboard and the other is a Nemesis Kane Pro. The Mouse I am using is an Acer model with a red tracker light on the bottom.

The problem persists with either keyboard.

I have wondered that using a unusual keyboard maybe even a wifi one might be a big enough change that the problem might go away.......

Suggestions on on that notion would be appreciated.

To test out the keyboard as admin Iog out as a user and then log back in as the adminstrator. The account environment looks rather different from the user one.

The fonts are all smaller. Trying to increase the taskbar font size is recalcitrant to the recommended methods that you find on google searches. The powershell also has very small fonts and it is hard trying to change them.

But the keyboard seemed to be happy.

I am going to go back on to the admin account and put the keyboard through its paces.

If it performs well I will post that result here.

    Regards

    MF

    Dear All,

I logged in as the administrator and I tried to perform the operations to fix a corrupt user profile.

    I discovered that I don't have a refcount file.

There is a way to create one apparently.

I looked at some web pages on this but they seemed a bit vague.

Is there a quick way to regenerate a refcount file?

I have noticed that my keyboard is performing really well even as a user now.

The fiddling around in the Registry editor I have just done may have stimulated something good to happen.....

The keyboard problem really does not occur if you log in as an administrator.

I am beginning to think this is some kind of user account set up problem and we might have blown away a few cobwebs when I looked at the user account file using the registry editor in some way.............

    Regards

That sounds interesting but somewhat beyond my pay grade.

Snooping around the registry I see many references to RefCount, however and more importantly; I only found one reference in the entire Profile List.

    Code:
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18

    I have a problem with my keyboard-0531b-refcount.jpg

I did locate a couple of interesting tidbits to review at these sites.
This first site provides definitions for different key values for RefCount.

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com...w7itprogeneral

And this site provides registry modification directions to repair corrupt profiles.

What to do if my user profile gets corrupted in Windows 10?

I had a similar problem, the taskbar was taking focus. Try those (run CMD and copy/paste):
    Code:
rem If the time elapsed since the last user input exceeds the value of the ForegroundLockTimeout entry, the window will automatically be brought to the foreground
    reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "ForegroundFlashCount" /t REG_SZ /d "0" /f

rem ForegroundLockTimeout specifies the time in milliseconds, following user input, during which the system keeps applications from moving into the foreground / 0 - Disabled / 200000 - Default
    reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "ForegroundLockTimeout" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f

    taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & explorer.exe
