    Resume from sleep by mouse sometimes works, sometimes not

    So since resume from sleep was introduced (perhaps 1990s), it always has had it share of problems. Now, on my Windows 10 system sleep and resume from sleep work as I want, except sometimes resume does not work.

    I have tried to pinpoint the cause for it, but I have no idea what the cause is. I have my Logitech mouse triggering the sleep by mouse click. But sometimes it does nothing.

    For example this happened:
    - powercfg.cpl: "Put the computer to sleep: 1 minute", now let it pass = sleep, mouse click, resume, no problem.
    - powercfg.cpl: "Put the computer to sleep: 2 hours" is my normal. Now I do whatever normal stuff on the computer. I forget to switch it off at night. In the morning I return to the computer, it's sleeping. I click the mouse. Nothing happens. I have to press the power switch, now it resumes normally.

    Looking at Event Viewer, it seems that in both cases the computer went to sleep the same way. There is probably a logical explanation to this, but what can it be? Any ideas?

    Hi Jim, I trust you've already set the following;

    From admin cmd, powercfg -deviceenablewake "HID-compliant mouse" as per this tutorial;

    Allow or Prevent Devices to Wake Computer in Windows 10

    And from the Device Manager/HID-compliant mouse properties/the Power Management tab.

    I had the same problem after the 1909 update. Eventually traced it by examining the Event Log...

    https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/full_event_log_view.html

    ...where I found a mass of messages relating to a USB input (no device attached) on my HP Printer which was being treated as a disk drive and being interrogated by the OS. What was in fact a long delay in response to the mouse movement was assumed by me to be not working. I disabled that input and problem solved.

    Thanks, Pollensa1946 that tool is new to me and very good to know. I'm not sure if you found those HP Printer events before or after the sleep event or how you were able to pinpoint the problem. But I actually just found out the source of my problem. My monitor's USB hub apparently switches off, when the monitor is switched off. It was pretty confusing because the monitor's sleep state and monitor off state are so close to eachother visually. So monitor's USB hub does still work, enabling also the connected mouse to trigger resume from sleep, if the monitor is only in standby and not switched off. However, an extra layer of confusion is caused by the fact that if the monitor power is switched off+on while computer is sleeping, it appears as if monitor's USB hub is still working while actually the resume from sleep by mouse connected to that hub is now broken until Windows is running again (and the wake function is armed again).

    Hi Jim, have you verified on the power management tab in device properties that "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." is not checked?

    There was no science to it. I simply spotted masses of errors in the events log starting immediately after I flicked the mouse to wake the PC. I looked at Device Manager and that USB input is classified as a Disk so I made the leap to... could this be causing a delay in response sufficient to fool me into thinking the Mouse was not working? I disabled that input and the problem disappeared. I never went back to analyse it any further.
