Not sure how to answer the direct connect question. It is a device on your network, much like a smart TV or a tablet.

It has its own operating system, not Windows.

The devices can talk and Windows uses it network protocols to communicate with the NAS. I use it for Macrium backups and when Macrium starts up it shows me a lists of Images i can restore from. If I didn't know I could tell if this list of files came from and internal, an external or a NAS.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your drives at the hardware level. Two many drives / sticks showing issues.

I would be inclined to think it is the enclosure but now you are saying you are also having issues with thumb drives.

Are you plugging the thumbdrive into the enclosure or directly to computer?

The Sabrent docking station that every screenshot in these posts for all the HD's in this post has been plugged into the USB port on the back of the computer (I've tried both ports on back). The thumb drive last night was plugged into one of the ports on the front of the computer. To me, that makes it seem like the Sabrent might not be faulty after all. And I wouldn't see how the back and front ports would have anything to do with one another because they're no where near one another, but maybe I just don't know how things are internally connected. But they atleast don't appear to be near one another.

Okay. SO we have multiple disks failing, USB Thumbdrives failing on various ports.

So is this a machine issue, Windows issue or third party software issue.

So time to eliminate one more item.

I would perform a clean boot and test. Do not start your third party explorer app.

Just use Windows and File Explorer.

    Clean boot (not install)

When was the last time you updated your 3rd party file manager? Is the version you are running supported under Windows 10?

A can do the clean boot this weekend when I get from work. I've been using the 3rd party explorer for about 3 or 4 years, all while under Win 10. To be honest, I had never updated it. It was near impossible for me to figure out how to customize it to my liking because it was by a Japanese developer and the instructions at the time were near non existent and we had major language barriers between him and I. I didn't wanna take the chance that all my settings would be knocked out if I did an upgrade. That's the type of paranoia you get from updating things when you've been raised in a Windows & Firefox world, lol.

Start Imaging your system and enjoy it. Things go wrong you restore.

Will be interesting to see results.

Sorry, I don't understand this part. I read most of the clean boot process, so I'm not understanding where the "restore" comes into play, and I really don't understand the imaging and enjoy it part. Sorry about that.

Oh I forgot to add this...........As far as the third party file explorer, I have no idea if this makes a difference or not, but I'm 99.9% certain that I've been using it, the Sabrent, and that thumb drive together for the last three years or so. It's amazing that when your in a crisis you doubt yourself and say things like "pretty certain" and "99.9%", when in reality I kinda think I'd bet my right arm that it's a dead certain 100%. And yet I still said "kinda think", lol.

    Sorry about that.

Do the clean boot process and see if you have the same errors with Windows File Manager.

The comment on Imaging and restoring was in response to your comment about being paranoid about updating. To expand.

Pretty much all the experienced members here Image their systems. Said another way they back up. A popular tool is Macrium Reflect.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

The free version does just about what everyone needs. I have my Windows and programs on a separate partition and I regularly image my system. I keep several versions.

If something goes south during an update I pull out my boot media and restore the last working Image and move on. It saves time and grief.

Dude, I feel like a friggin' idiot, I really do. Here's yet ANOTHER stupid question.

"Do the clean boot process and see if you have the same errors with Windows File Manager"

I realize my post is about figuring out the errors when it comes to my externals, but we we're just talking about the 3rd party file manager I use.........soooooo, when you say "see if you have the same errors with Windows File Manager"......are we talkin' about see if the same errors (specifically the ones I'm getting that ONLY pertain to the 3rd party FM I'm using, and not the errors I'm getting that pertain only to my external HD's??? Or are you saying that I should use my Windows FM in the clean boot state while I copy/paste files to and from my externals to see if I get the same errors (pertaining to just my externals) while transferring the data. Sorry man, only I can make such a few simple statements into a confusing mess.

About Macrium. I have Aomei Backupper which I tried to use right before I roll backed but my internal HD is completely full at 1TB and I wanted to put it on a thumb drive but don't have one that big so I figured a windows restore point was better than nothing. I see from your post that this line "I have my Windows and programs on a separate partition" is something that I would've benefited from.

I'm thinking that somehow the 3rd party FM is causing issues.

I have no proof but there is no way you should be having problems with external drives and USB Thumbdrives.

The drive issues could be your enclosure but that wouldn't explain why you have errors on Thumbdrives.

So trying to eliminate the 3rd party file manager (and its possible drivers) from being involved.

By doing a clean boot you achieve this. Then see if you get these errors just using Windows and its file manager.

Yes having data split off allows for a much smaller "System" image. We have some tutorials on how to used an alternate partition for data while still keeping the concept of documents, pictures, music, etc.

Ok, thanks for getting back to me. I gotta look into this, I'm not even sure I can do this test. All, or close to all of my HD's (external and internal) are very possibly all completely full. That's why I just purchased these 8TB HD's, so I can reconfigure and rearrange all my HD's to free up a bunch of space again. That's why I'm in such a pickle right now, I literally can't do a damn thing without risking possible huge data loss that I'll never be able to get back again. If the changing of drive letters trick to get your computer to "see" everything on that HD worked everytime, I would do it no problem. But clearly, after losing 2TB's of data already (which is really 5TB of data because I can't use that HD again until I reformat it), clearly that trick doesn't work everytime. I'm gonna try like heck to figure out if I can maneuver some files around that I still have backed up twice, because some I'm down to only one backup and that scares me. If I can find a way, it could take me awhile to post back considering sometimes it can take like 5 hours to all day before I ever get an error.

Also, after some googling......there's a bunch of sites that more or less say the same thing. Here's an example of just a few sites:

Fix External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting in Windows 10/8/7

[Solved] USB drive keeps disconnecting and reconnecting? Use this guide| DiskInternals

I haven't tried any of these yet, do you have any take on these examples?
