Did you turn off raid In Windows first (Through the Intel Optane storage management) Then change it
    in the Bios ?
Before you made the image of the C drive?

It shouldn't matter restoring a 500 to a 1T you can adjust it after .
That is moving restore partitions and extending c to the un-allocated space

As far as I know the Intel Optane Storage Management is not installed. I swapped the HDD with the SSD from my old desktop and never set it up. I tried once but my computer wouldn't boot so I uninstalled the Optane software and reset the Bios. I don't remember the Bios setting I changed. The second try with a new image didn't work. I'm thinking it's a setting in the Bios. I can't even change the boot order in the Bios. It does show the drive though.

If you have just the M2 drive in there will be no boot order to change.

is your Original C drive working?

Without removing the Nvme plug the original Drive back in.
Boot to Windows and open Disk Management If it only shows 1 drive instead of 2 (Nvme and HDD or SSD)
then windows is still in Raid mode. The Intel program can be downloaded from the windows store.
I'll add to this after I boot to bios and see what I changed there.

The Sata SSD is still installed. I can try starting the desktop without it to see if it works.

yes , It may be confused about which disk.

    Bios

    Storage/ storage options

Sata emulation or achi (choose achi)

    May say Raid or achi

    Security /slot security
    Mine shows

    Pci express x16 slot 1
    Pci express x1 slot 1
    m.2 slot 1
    M.2 slot 2
    all enabled
    secure boot configuration
    legacy disabled
    secure boot enable
    key ownership hp keys

I do know in bios achi is selected and secure boot is enabled. I'm not sure about any other settings.

Removing the Sata SSD worked. When I restarted my computer it went to the boot screen and Windows loaded. I'll test it for awhile and if everything runs OK I'll use the NVMe drive for Windows and my programs and format the SSD and use it as my data drive.

You do understand Intel and AMD work differently... right?

That sounds like you never changed the boot order in the BIOS when you swapped the OS to the new drive. Removing the "SATA" drive pretty much forced the system to look elsewhere for a boot drive.

That said, make sure the NVME is the first drive in the boot order

    Good luck.

Windows doesn't like two active boot disks

    Congrats!
