Toshiba C660 Laptop does not wake from sleep on Windows 10 1909

    Hi everyone,

I've been trying to setup an old Toshiba C660 laptop with Windows 10 (version 1909). The one problem that I've encountered is that the laptop does not resume from sleep. The fan spins and power light comes on, but there is nothing (no backlight) on the screen and the num lock and caps lock keys do nothing, indicating that the laptop is completely frozen. Therefore, I have to perform a hard shutdown (pressing and holding the power button.) When I go to turn the computer on again, nothing comes up on the screen and the machine does not appear to post, although there is fan spin. The only way to revive the computer is to reinstall the battery.

The specs for this laptop are:

    - AMD Athlon II P360 Processor
    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Graphics
    - 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM (soon to be upgraded to 4GB)
    - 240GB Integral SSD
    - Windows 10 version 1909

This problem does not occur on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I don't believe this is a hardware issue, given that the RAM has been tested using MemTest x86+ and the SSD is brand new (I've also tried a different brand of SSD.)

    So far, I have tried:
    - Reinstalling Windows 10.
    - Using Windows Update provided drivers
    - Installing the legacy Windows 8 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 driver (via device manager)
    - Disabling hibernate via CMD
    - Disabling fast startup

Nothing I have tried has worked yet unfortunately. Could anyone provide any further suggestions please? If it comes to it, I may just install Windows 8.1, as that seems to work fine.

    Thanks a lot, Ben.

What is the exact serial number and complete model number on your "Toshiba C660" laptop?
(Note: a dash and additional characters after C660 comprises the complete model number)

Considering how weak the processor and graphics are in that old laptop, and even with 4 GB of RAM and a solid state drive, I don't believe you're going to be happy running Windows 10 in it.

    Serial Number

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply! The model is C660D-155 and serial number is 3B116090K. It seems to run Windows 10 well enough for its purpose :).

You have a Dynabook Toshiba Satellite C660D-155 laptop which was originally purchased in the U.K. and came with these specs:
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
AMD Athlon II P360 dual core 2.30 GHz processor
    4 GB (2 GB X 2) DDR3-1066 RAM
    640 GB hard disk drive
    DVD+/-RW disc drive
    ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics
    Realtek audio
    Realtek ethernet
    Intel wireless

Its support site has no downloadable drivers for Windows 10 64-bit.
If Windows 10 64-bit doesn't provide drivers for all of its primary devices, you will need to search for them - if they exist.

    Display Drivers

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried installing the drivers from Toshiba's website and directly from AMD. There are no official drivers for Windows 10 - the best drivers I could install are for Windows 8. Unfortunately, no drivers I have tried have solved the problem so far .

Have you tried installing drivers using compatibility mode? I had no problems using win7 drivers with a clean install of 1809 on an old Dell laptop.

Yeah, the drivers from AMD and Toshiba were installed using device manager, as it seems the AMD installer .exe wouldn't work on Windows 10. I'm just trying each batch of drivers again, just in case! Cheers :)

If you run the compatibility mode from file properties of the .exe you're much more likely to have success.

    Use option 1

Thanks for the reply, just given this a go. Unfortunately, when using the correct compatibility settings, the AMD Install Manager doesn't actually install the driver, just the Catalyst software. Cheers, Ben.

Is the driver packaged in an .exe file and have you attempted both Win7 & Win8 type Compatibility mode? Unfortunately, the Compatibility mode is never guaranteed to function correctly.
