    Chipset Driver for Old PC

    Win 10 1909

This has probably been asked a million times, but, sorry, I can't find an answer that is clear to me. I decided to put my older PC back in service (backup PC). It's an Asus G10AJ and I've installed the current WIndows 10 (1909). It's a 9 Series (H97).
The only chipset driver I can find on the Asus site is from 2014. I've found other drivers from the H97 Pro MB site, but they are old too.

Since I'm running Windows 10, what chipset drivers should I use? Old or current? I installed the latest intel chipset driver (10.1.18) when I installed the OS and things seem fine. But now I'm not sure that was right.

    Thanks

If it's working use the age-old axiom of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but beware of the opposite, "keep fixing it until it is broken". One thing I like about Win10 is it usually has the best driver support for usual OEM-type computers. But a Custom may need something different and changing hardware in a Desktop will need drivers that may not yet be available in Windows Update such as Video/Graphics Add-in cards.

After thinking about the response for 24 hours, I don't think I really got an answer, did I? Should I be using a 7-year-old OEM chipset driver or the most current?

    There is no answer.

If Windows has a driver then you could try your existing one then try the Windows-offered one and decide if there is any dfference.

You would want to use this before changing anything because it is quicker than restoring a system image Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials
but before experimenting with such a central piece of hardware it would also be worthwhile checking your arrangements for restoring your most recent system image.

But you might not be able to recognise any difference in computer behaviour in which case the only conclusion might be the vague & unprovable notion that the newer driver might be more resilient to malware infiltration.

Ask yourself, is there some feature added to the BIOS in later versions that is really really needed and does there exist anything that can use that feature. A BIOS is purchased from companies such as Award, American Megatrends, Phoenix, etc., that create them then modified by the makers of motherboards in support of features on the board. Nearly all external/plug in devices are made to work on any computer so it all boils down as to whether one wants to continue with older equipment. I like to use what I can but then my needs are simpler than others and I've been able to salvage parts to support them.

Then there's the mistakenly-identified "planned obsolence" of older equipment. The simple fact in that regard is that when a product is no longer produced or sold there is no income from it to pay the programmers to keep the software for it up to date with the ever-changing Operating Systems, a matter of economics. It's a balancing act between something in one hand that still works and something in the other hand that may or may not be usable.

I would install the latest drivers from the motherboard supplier then let Windows 10 update it should it find a more suitable driver

The best tested drivers are displayed on the Asus website.
Then perform Windows updates as Steve C commented above.

Only if there are problems then you can perform trial and error steps using the Intel software:
