Competing companies, both work pretty good. I've used AMD CPUs since my first computer in '92, have both brands in a few Desktops and a few Notebooks, don't notice much difference in their performance but I'm not a gamer.

Programs that work on an OS tend to work the same on either brand. Most of what I do perform better with more RAM installed.

The AMD is frequently cheaper than the Intel for those building a computer, I used AMD.

I've not seen a definitive comparison but might look at some of the online publications that run reviews of products. With computers everything is subjective to want or need, programs installed, etc. One can buy 2 or more seemingly identical computers at the same time and place but as soon as they are placed in use there will be at least one difference from the other/s, customizations, programs, etc.

That is not really a fair assessment. Both companies make very good CPU's. I've gone back and forth between the brands over the years. My latest build is a Ryzen 7 3800X and I wouldn't change a thing if I were to build again.

You will typically find Intel has slightly higher clock speeds, but AMD usually has more cores and therefore threads it can support.

Many people equate frames per seconds in video games to be the ultimate performance test. Generally speaking, video games favor single threads and the CPU with the absolutely highest clock speed will win that war. So, Intel typically gets about 5% more FPS all things being equal. But your video card is also going to make a huge difference here. You aren't going to get the same performance if you are running an Nvidia 1060 versus an RTX 2080TI. So, its pointless to have the absolute fastest CPU possible if you also don't have the absolute fastest video card to go with it.

Other people run applications primarily that support mutiple threads. If that describes you, you may benefit more from having additional threads and cores. For example, when video rendering, you might see a 10-20% performance increase comparing an AMD 3950 versus an Intel i9-9900k Both are pretty much the same price, but the AMD gives you 12 cores/24 threads, where the Intel gives you 8 cores/16 threads. So, if you aren't a gamer and don't care for FPS, and you run apps that multithread mostly, AMD might be the better chip for the $.

Then, comes the other components of the system. Intel only has support for PCI-Express Gen 3 M2 SSD's. While MD has support for PCI-Express Gen 4 M2 SSD's. So, depending upon the type of work you do, woulld you rather get 3,500MB/sec performance from your Gen3 PCIe SSD, or would you rather get 5,000MB/sec.

Both make great processors, and both will likely make you quite happy.

You'd have to compare specific processors. There are number of Intel I5 and Ryzen 5 CPUs, even if you only consider the most current generations.

Here is one comparison of similarly priced CPUs: UserBenchmark: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 vs Intel Core i5-9400

They are both 6 core CPUs, but the Ryzen supports hyperthreading, so it would appear to Windows as 12 cores. To get hyperthreading in a 6 core desktop Intel CPU, I believe that you'd have to go to an I7.

I've used Intel for years. Hadn't used an AMD CPU since the Socket 939 days. However, both of my current desktops use Ryzens. See "My Computers" for details.
