Display delay/lag with Wacom DTU-1031X, only on Windows 10. Need Help

    hi Guys !

Recently I bought a Wacom DTU 1031X graphics tablet. Unfortunately I have a problem with the display delay. This tablet is connected via two USB 2.0 connections. In addition to the official Wacom driver, i tried all the driver versions of DisplayLink as well as the Trigger Family dongle driver, present on the Wacom page. I tried a few new and previous versions of the intel video drivers.

This problem appears even on a friend's computer who use also windows 10.

On windows 7 Professional SP1 but also windows 8.1, the tablet works perfectly, without any delay. On Windows 10, the only version that runs on the tablet is built in 1511 (year 2015). All versions over this built cause the tablet to have a screen delay.

This delay is only present on the tablet screen. On the laptop screen everything runs perfectly. This lag appears if I use the mouse but also the pen, the problem being present on both.

The strange part is that this lag does not manifest on the cursor, which moves perfectly synchronized with the mouse or pen.

For example, if I try to move a window from one direction to another, the cursor follows the pen in real time, but the window has a slight delay in following the cursor. The same delay appears when I am in the start menu. if I move the cursor or pen up or down in that menu, the cursor keeps pace, but the animation in the menu stays behind. Even in the paint program, if I want to draw something, the cursor moves in real time, but the drawn line is far behind.

I even tried to disable certain options like pen and ink, and other things, but no change. The lag is not given by the pen or tablet, that's for sure. But a communication problem between the laptop and the tablet screen.

I don't know what else to do. I ran out of ideas. Please help me solve this problem !

    Mmmm. Odd problem.

My first thought is about drivers. Some more info would help:
    • How old is this device?
    • Does the manufacturer have Windows 10 64 bit drivers you can download?
    • Is the device running on drivers automatically installed by Windows 10, or are you using a manufacturer's driver now?

I'm also thinking about a graphics issue:
    • You say you tested the tablet on a Windows 7 and 8 machine. Are these both laptops?
    • What is the graphics device on the machines that work? Driver version?
    • What is the graphics device on the problem machines? Driver version?

    Hi @TV2 !

So I will try to answer your questions now..

*My laptop is from 2016 and the graphics tablet is manufactured in December 2017

*Yes. On the Wacom page, the Wacom DTU 1031X has current drivers available. Drivers updated for the current year. In addition to the official driver, Wacom also requires the installation of a driver from Magic Control Technology Corporation. Driver also available on their page. So wacom requires the installation of two drivers for the tablet to work.

*On windows 7 and windows 8.1 the tablet needs to install the official drivers in order to work.Without them, the tablet is not recognized and the screen is black
On Windows 10, without the official drivers installed, only with windows integrated drivers, the tablet screen lights up, but can only be used as an external monitor. The pen is not recognized without official drivers.
The interesting part is that the lag is present even before installing the official wacom drivers !

*I tested windows 7 and windows 8.1 on my own laptop. I have installed almost all original iso windows images, to see which ones work and which ones don't.
What I find interesting is that it works perfectly on windows 10, but only on version 1511. All versions of windows 10 over version 1511, give the tablet the lag I'm talking about.

*My laptop has two video cards. An integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600m board with all current drivers. I also tested with much older drivers. And the second graphics card is a dedicated one. an AMD Radeon 8750 M. Same with all drivers up to date.

So after I tested several driver variants, I tend to think that this is a problem that is strictly Windows 10. Probably from version 1511, which works perfectly with the tablet, they added something extra that made the tablet no longer. communicates well with the laptop. Especially since the delay is present even before the official drivers are installed.

I will attach here a link with a video to better understand my problem.

Tonight, after posting the last message here, I went to visit 2 friends with the tablet to test it. A friend is still using Windows 8.1 on a newly configured system with very recent hardware. The tablet moves perfectly without lag. At the second friend the problem with the delay appeared again. Here, I tested the tablet on a laptop but also on a desktop PC. Both manifest this delay on latest windows 1909 build. Afterwards, I asked him to install on the laptop windows 10. build 1511. On this build the tablet works perfectly. Just like on my laptop. Something has been added or removed from this build, as newer versions appear. Otherwise I cannot explain the problem considering that I have tried a lot of versions on the graphics tablet drivers, but also different versions of the drivers on the video cards. I even tried installing them in compatibility mode.
At home I did tests on windows build 1607, 1709 and 1809. Apart from windows 10 build 1511 on all versions, the delay is present. Everything besides windows 7 , windows 8.1 and window 10 build 1511, seems to have a problem with the tablet

That's some pretty extensive diagnostic work and I think you are spot on. There is something in the recent versions of Windows 10 that are causing this problem, not hardware, not drivers (directly).

Unfortunately I am much more of a hardware guy than a software guy. But I can see if there is any software guys who can take a look for you.

Guys, I think I found out what's causing this screen delay. As I said before, the tablet works perfectly on windows 7, windows 8.1 and windows 10 build 1511.
Today I have reinstalled the version of windows 10 build 1511. It is installed in parallel with the latest version of windows 10.

What caught my attention after a few careful comparisons, is that on the first build 1511, the tablet screen is not recognized without the official drivers installed. Instead of the latest build, Windows automatically recognizes the tablet screen and displays it in the "Monitors" section of Device Manager as Generic PnP Monitor.
And my tablet is listed in the "Display Adapters" section, right next to the video cards.

Somehow newer versions of windows 10 ignore the official driver installed for the tablet screen and continue to display the image through the outdated driver from the 2006 Generic Pnp Monitor. I tried to update the PnP driver by manually selecting the tablet driver. But even in this mode it continues to display through Generic Pnp driver.

Is there any possibility to cancel the windows permission to run the tablet through Generic PnP driver?
On the windows 10 Build 1511, the only device that windows runs through Generic PnP, is the external monitor and the laptop screen. The tablet is completely closed until I install the official drivers. And in the "Graphic Adapters" section, apart from the two video cards, the tablet is not listed as a graphic adapter, as it happens on the latest version of windows 10.
Running the tablet screen through the generic driver is almost certainly the cause of my problem. I have to somehow block windows to ignore the official driver.

You could try to install the correct driver manually.
    Steps:
    • Have ready the driver folder for the "Official Driver". Save it in an easy to find location (Desktop).
    • Go to Device Manager > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware Tab > Device Installation Settings > Select: NO.
    • Unplug from the internet, disable Wifi. (This is redundant, but it is so Windows won't just ignore the setting and reinstall the generic driver from Windows Update on restart.)
    • Disconnect the Tablet from the PC. Then go into Device Manager and uninstall the Tablet. When asked to remove the driver also say Yes. It is important that the driver be uninstalled. If you do not get asked you may need to manually uninstall the driver. You could prepare for this by going into the driver details in Device Manager and write down the drivers listed so you can find them later.
    • Restart the PC and make sure there is no leftover entries.
    • Connect the Tablet > check Device Manager. Note if the generic driver was installed again. Regardless:
    • Select the device > Properties > Driver Tab > Update Driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list > Have Disk > Browse to the "Official Driver" folder > select the sys file > Install.
    • Restart the PC and let's see if it holds.

You could leave the Device Installation Settings off for a bit to test the device before switching it back on. But there is no guarantee that Windows won't install the generic driver again. You'd need to test this

You could also just try the last 2 steps about first. The rest may be unnecessary, but if Windows won't give up on the generic driver you may have to do the extra steps.

    Hi @TV2 !

I did all this ..I uninstalled everything. I reset the computer. I installed the official driver, after which I reset. As soon as the computer was turned on, the generic PnP driver appeared again after the official driver was installed.

When I try the device manager update method and I select "have disk" then "browse", no driver appears as available because from what I see it requires the format to be setup information * .inf, and the tablet driver is an executable file. The tablet works with 2 official drivers. Wacom driver for standard tablet installation and MCT (Magic control technology) driver that allows communication between PC and screen. Basically a graphics driver. The MCT driver can be installed without any problems as an executable file. It appears in the computer, but is completely ignored by Windows which chooses to run the image through the Generic PnP driver. I think I will stay on built 1511, I start to think that there is no solution to the problem unfortunately.

    Hi!
I was following this thread as I have acquired DTU-1031X as well and was waiting for shipment. I am on Windows 10 1903 and I find no noticeable lag on the tablet display after plugging it in.
The monitor is also listed in Device manager as Generic PnP Monitor under Monitors section, but the MCT display driver is installed as a DTU-1031X graphics card under Display adapters.

Make sure that the said driver is installed there. You should have installed both drivers (display and tablet) before connecting the device for the first time to make it pick up the right driver.

If you want to install the driver manually, install the TriggerFamily Dongle driver package, and follow the steps to manually install the driver, and point the directory to C:\Program Files (x86)\MCT Corp\UVTP100 (and make sure it searches subdirectories) and it should pick up the right thing automatically. The driver .inf file seems to be named trgidd64.inf and the device ID is 0711:520F. Hope this helps!

One way or the other, it's possible to make it work! Hope this helps!

    Cheers!
    Sos
