Asus Laptop Webcam Just Portraying Black Screens

    Hi All,

Really stumped by my laptop's webcam. I'm just getting a black/ blank screen whenever I launch the MS Camera app, Zoom or Skype. The power light comes on but that's it. No picture of me whatsoever. I'm on 1909.

    I've tried the following.

1 - Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver from the device manager, multiple times.
2 - I've checked all the camera privacy options to make sure it's not being blocked.
3 - I removed the battery and held down the power button to clear any static (was told that static can interfere with certain components).
    4 - Updated windows.
5 - Updated onboard and dedicated gpu drivers
6 - Directly pulled a driver from the web - USB2.0 HD UVC Webcam
7- Altered the registry (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform). Made no difference so deleted the key afterwards.
8 - Reset the camera app from settings
9 - Got desperate so shone my phone's torch directly at the lens, apparently that can help.
10 - Trouble shooted the issue from a hardware standpoint to make sure the issue wasn't structural.
11 - Physically inspected the camera and wiped down the lens with a microfibre cloth, the actual lens not just the webcam cover.
    12. Adjusted Skype settings to automatic on the exposure settings, then just uninstalled it.
    13. Tried to automatically add in the drivers from a Legacy standpoint, (looking for a driver now so I can try and upload it manually)

Would be very grateful for some assistance as like most of you I am noAsus Laptop Webcam Just Portraying Black Screens-camera.pngw working from home and am in need of well, the camera. I do hope its not a hardware issue, the webcam light is functioning.

    Do hope you're all well,

    Rob

You have certainly done due diligence.

    Question:
"Directly pulled a driver from the web - USB2.0 HD UVC Webcam" : where did you get this driver from?

One thing to try first is to use the full Skype program for desktop PC, not the Skype bundled with Windows 10.
We just had a user with an upside down Asus camera issue and that was a solution for him.

Thank you for your reply TV2.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure (the driver), it was a few weeks back and I was desperate. I'll dig through my history later on and see what I can find.

I do have Skype for Desktop on my machine at the moment, was never a fan of the Windows app version.

This is often a driver problem, but can be a simple case of a bad camera. Since the driver is easier to troubleshoot than replacing the camera it's best to start there.

Let's get some info we need:

Full Model number of the laptop

    Hardware ID:
    • Go to Device Manager > select the camera device > right click > Properties
    • Go to the Details Tab > in the Drop Down select Hardware IDs
    • Give me the 4 character codes (xxxx) after VID_xxxx , PID_xxxx , and REV_xxxx (or just take a screenshot)

We'll see if we can get a working driver.

Sorry completely forgot to add that in.

It's an Asus FX553V for some reason the system info reads differently, a Google search suggests that it is indeed a FX553V, I assume they share the same board.

Mmmm. There is no camera driver offered by Asus for your model. Unusual.
That means they have deferred to Microsoft for the driver.

Have you tried the method described here?:
[Notebook]How to solve Notebook’s camera problem – Troubleshooting | Official Support | ASUS USA

Also, have you tried a test site like this one?:

I did check the Asus download centre but couldn't find a driver, thought it was just me being dense.

Yeah, I have tried that guide, have tried to automatically upload the drivers a few times. I also uninstalled the existing driver, restarted the machine and tried again just to make sure. Have also made sure I'm running on the latest version of Windows. Just in case.

I ran Webcam Test twice, it timed out, ultimately, both times. It did find the camera which suggests (to me anyway) that the hardware is intact? It just didn't seem to be able to interact with it which (again, to me anyway) indicates that its a still a driver issues. I may, of course, be completely off the mark.

I can only assume that with the windows anniversary update that something got deleted?? At the mo, I'm looking for a decent way to get a spare phone to act as a tethered webcam. Might be my best bet till another update arrives? I dunno, just clutching at straws currently.

    Thanks again for everything!

Actually it is looking more and more like a failed camera.

Here is another thing you can try: pinch the areas on either side of the webcam. You will be applying pressure to press the camera into the lid. Not so much to break anything, but enough to make a connection if anything were loose.
A very long shot. But, this actually worked for another poster.
