    Increase RAM

    Hello

my Son connects to a server, which asks him to allocate RAM, his laptop does t have much, is there a way of using the SSD as virtual RAM which would be acceptable to the server ?

    thanks

Only if it's a Samsung and using the Magician software. I don't know of any 3rd party software that will do the same. Otherwise you'll need to add more RAM to the laptop.

when I bought a new graphic card, I received some software, canít remember who made it G Force maybe.....it allowed you to increase the ram by using the HDD, think 8GB was the limit with the free version....wish I could remember more detail

    UPDATE
    remembered it

    AMD Radeon(TM) RAMDisk

will this do what I want ?

the laptop has 3GB RAM, but it will accept 4 Gb...( HP DV6700 ) if it has a 1GB and a 2GB chip, is it safe to replace the 1GB with a new 2GB ?

Another thing that may or may not work, use a 4GB, 8GB or 16GB SDHC card [same as camera card] in the slot and activate ReadyBoost.

RAMDisk software is exactly the opposite of what you want. It uses RAM to simulate a very fast hard disk (faster than an SSD).

Why does the server your son uses want RAM? Buffering?

I donít know, I assume so, can get details if it helps....

been advised AMD ram disk is the OPP of what I need it uses ram to create a fast HDD partition

not sure if going from 3 GB ram to 4 GB will help much, plus think will need to buy all new RAM, unles I can get just 2GB and match it

another option would be to get a new laptop.....thought CEX, lot cheaper and 1 year guarantee....is this the right forum to ask for advice on make model ? Obviously memory size will help, HDD size is not so important...fast CPU would be good, but GPU again not so important.......should I ask here ? Or in a different forum ?

    thanks

P.S. Ready boost will not work and is disabled if the OS is on an SSD

Yes....that is correct as ready boost was designed to be used with the standard mechanical HDD's.

Ready boost was originally intended to allow the use of a USB flash drive as a cache for an HDD. (The USB drive might not be be fast, but it would be random access, unlike an HDD.) Again, it's not helpful to your son.

I see that the HP DV6700 accepts a maximum of 4GB of RAM. (I have a disused Compaq CQ50-105NR of the same vintage, 2008, with the same limitation.) That's pretty ancient. It may be time for an upgrade. Even to a used laptop. I used to work for a guy who bought several desktop replacement laptops (17" screen, heavy) on eBay at good prices. They all worked.

I see a misunderstanding about RAM. The RAM is volatile storage unlike a drive, only works while there is power to the computer and the Operating System is working. Rebooting/shutdown removes any data in it. When the OS is running there is a lot of read/write being done, really not much can be gained for running programs except by closing things open or running in the background which definitely can affect how the OS is working.

As for terms, the RAM and the drives use the same sizing terms as in bit, Byte, KiloByte, MegaByte, GigaByte, TeraByte, etc. A Byte is equal to 8 bits.

To commiserate with the user, there comes a time where bigger, better, faster rules what the users can do and gamers are a bit factor in that, not a bad thing but just something to consider in how we want to do things.
