Maybe you need to install w7 Asus driver in w7 compatibility mode. Or give Snappy Driver Installer a try, but install only the driver for your camera and do a Restore Point before proceeding.

First of all happy Easter! Unfortunately it still didn't worked. Post #6 method installed the Asus driver, but then I received the same error of post #3. No luck also after I temporarily disabled Windows Defender. It seems that for some reasons Windows 10 doesn't like the Asus driver. Their support hasn't come back to me yet, I suppose they will after Easter holidays. I'll keep you updated.
I think you are correct - Windows 10 just will not run this driver. When you get the message that it can't find the camera it means that the system does not recognize that driver as being for that camera. And we know that is not true.

If you want to try one more thing:
First, check to see if you have allowed Windows to install drivers through Windows Update:
Type: "Advanced System Settings" into Windows Search > opens System Properties window > go to the Hardware Tab > click on Device Installation Settings > see if the option to automatically download and install software for your devices is set to Yes.

Then: go to Device Manager > select the webcam > right click > properties > Update Driver > choose: Search for driver > get the "you have the best driver..." message > then click on "Search for Updated Drivers on Windows Update".
See if it finds anything new.

Have you tried it without the Asus drivers, i.e. just let Windows install its/the drivers ? Did you ever see if/how it worked before installing the Asus drivers ?
Yes, that's the only way to make the camera work.
But as I said, the picture is upside down, 180 degrees tilted.

Decade old Asus and Fujitsu laptops used an internal camera from a Chinese vendor named Sonix and the model was usually called Azurewave , the cam was cheap and designed awkwardly and had to be installed upside down in their laptops , they solved the upside down by forcing flip and mirror video flags in their official driver by default .

All webcams from that era shared the very same settings window that could be accessed by programs like Skype , you could hit settings button in video/camera properties and end up with a window where you can adjust brightness / contrast / saturation / gamma / luma / mirror and flip , so if he managed to install a non official driver (the ones that came pre-edited) installed , he would have just come to this window and apply the flags manually .

Now lately DCH standard entitles all apps to drop direct access to hardware settings or control panels , so such button was removed from most apps that had it previously .

So he either has to find some legacy app that would allow access to such settings window or see to the possibility of installing the windows 7 driver from that era in compatibility mode which 90% of the time wouldn't work .

But then lets face it now , its a VGA cam , one would opt for buying some HD cam these days anyways than rather attempt revive such horrible quality one .

P.S I can't just keep floating around doing custom drivers to hardware i don't own , things like that needs testing etc .

    Cheers

    Thanks nIGHTmAYOR. That's great info.
I was only asking if you had heard of a custom driver for this situation. Certainly did not think you were going to make one!
    Thanks for taking a look.

    Wait... what?
nIGHTmAYOR can actually make a functional driver to fix this problem?

    Would be epic!

Yeah of course, in the end I'm not even sure if I ever used the webcam of this laptop!
It's my secondary computer and I have a proper HD one in my desktop PC.

But if possible I still would like to find a way to put it straight.

I tried, but it didn't worked.

I followed the instructions, but when I launched the Camera app, I received the same error message that you can see in post #3.

Asus replied to me, but they simply said that this laptop is not certified for Windows 10 so some functionalities might now work, bla bla bla...

Never mind, it's not a massive problem, if I ever need the webcam I can just use a USB one.

TV2 and nIGHTmAYOR, thanks for all your help!

    UPDATE

I read Asus mail properly, and they also said that the camera might not be recognised by Microsoft Store apps (so the Camera app, or the Skype app) but it might work with "desktop software".

So I downloaded Skype from Skype website and... it worked!

The camera was working, and not upside down!

It's still not working on the Camera app, or if I use Skype app...

But if I use the "classic" Skype (or desktop, like Asus calls it) it works perfectly!

I think this is more than enough, considering that webcams are generally used via Skype anyway.

    Good news!
    Congratulations!

What this tells me is that there are software fixes for your issue. The software is adding the functionality needed that the driver software used to do. I suspect by adding some keys to the registry or adding their own .sys files.

To be completely clear, I still had to install the Windows 7 x64 driver from Asus website.
With that driver, the camera doesn't work (as we seen before) in Microsoft Store apps (like Camera and Skype) but it works perfectly on "desktop" Skype.

With the generic Windows 10 driver, the camera was upside down also on desktop Skype.
