Brother Printer exists & works, but won't "Install" - Why?

Gang I have really appreciated how Windows 10 can pickup devices on the network and get them working without the user even knowing what happened. Saves steps. With multifunction printers, however, it is better in some cases to run the Manufacturers software stack for key important key features, in this case scanning multiple pages into one PDF. I have not seen a case like this one: The Device, a Brother MFC-L2707dw, is working - windows dropped it into Devices & Printers with no intervention, both by USB, and later by WIFI. The basic functions work. It will print, scan, and copy. But all not well.

The info on the printer is not populated other than the basic ID: it gets the model correct, all other information missing in Windows Devices & Printers. Most importantly, in trying to install either the Basic Drivers package or the Full Features package from Brother [they only list those two in Downloads for Windows 10], I have to quit the install because it cannot detect the printer. Fails when connected by USB, and fails when connected only by WIFI [and the printer works on WIFI as well as USB]. Similarly, if I delete the Printer and then use the "Add Printer" in Windows Control Panel, Windows 10 cannot discover the device. [but it does... just not the prescribed way]

I have not tried this in Safe Mode - I assumed drivers would be squelched and the package would fail again.

    Anyone have a suggestion here?

When you moved to Windows 10 did you follow this advice....

    Windows 10 Compatibility
If you upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, some features of the installed drivers and software may not work correctly. Please uninstall all drivers and software in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 before upgrading to Windows 10.
    Source - Downloads | MFC-L2707DW | United States | Brother

With that, have you checked the USB cable is good? Also for Wi-Fi, if you've a dual or tri-band router 2.2gig or 5gig band, have you tried the 2.2gig channel as opposed to the 5gig channel. Some devices only support 2.2 band, not the 5gig band.

Anyway you shouldn't have to install the printer in safe mode and I'm not even sure that would work anyway as safe mode basically disables most drivers other than the essentials to get the PC up and running.

Clean install of windows 10 v1909.
I did not check the router for a 5ghz band. Only one SSID was given, both devices on same.
I got a Brother rep on chat today and she's sending a few things to try

When you installed, did you have printer shut off / disconnected and left it that way until the installation called for it?

Before trying again delete all software and MS installed apps related to Brothers printers.

You mentioned you use MS for AV (assume Defender). Do you have any other tools (Cleaners, Optimizers, Privacy etc)

nope. no other defenses. in the chat session I had with some first line tech rep at Brother, I specifically asked about their contradictory statements about having the device on or off [reading their troubleshooting faqs and the readme's included in the install packages, they say both - no, and yes.]. the rep says it doesn't matter, but the best is to connect to wifi... here is her exact answer from the transcript: "Laura: The best practice is that one, to connect first the machine using the machine's control panel and then run the installation."
In other words, I did the right thing, so it should all work right [wash/rinse/repeat]

    ?
How about simply updating the drivers? Use 7zip to unpack everything, point to the folder, voila? even if that worked, it would not install the Scanner manager part of the Brother Control Center, which is looking for a device, and not finding one.

    I appreciate the ideas.

While the tech support person should know more than us, I'm not exactly sure she knows what she's talking about and is probably reading from some talking point.

That said, did you download the "Full Driver & Software Package" ??? That's the package you need to get full functionality of the printer. Not just the drivers only!

You might also look at the Utilities for Wi-Fi setup, and Firmware for firmware update.

    Let us know.

    Is this printer new?

Has it been installed successfully on any computer?

Check whether I understood you well.
First try: Add new printer, Windows finds printer and loads its own drivers/programme automatically. It wprks but not with the Brother drivers.
    Second try: Brother package: failed
I suggest a third try: Add new printer; the printer that I wanted is not listed; continue and see of your model is listed. in the list of printers.
I had difficulties with setting up another Brother printer, and the third try solved it.
