    USB Stick write protected

Hi, my wife got a new laptop and I was setting it up. Install
software and moving all her files from the old one to the new one. So I inserted
the stick in to the old computer and used drag and drop to copy the files, or
    better several folders.

At one point at about 500 mb it stops and tells me that the
drive is write protected. I tried it on 3 different computer all say the same.
I tried to change that, but could not find a way to do that. I clicked on the
drive and selected Properties, but I got no where. Any one know what to do?

    Thanks
    Sven

I would replace the drive. Even if the read only could be revered I would not trust the drive.

To preserve existing data many flash drives will enter a special read only mode if an internal error is detected. This mode is typically not reversible. It may be possible to do so but you would run the considerable risk of corrupting the data.

I am not saying that is what happened. But it does seem likely.

A common symptom of a dying USB drive. Replace it. They are dirty cheap.

    Sven,

elpusher is correct. This is a commonly-reported symptom of a dying drive. You will be able to keep reading the existing data on the drive for much, much longer but that is generally of little consolation.
