Ok, I haven't done anything, but I was already moving the items back to the external drive... Can I open my movie player, or when you say "anything", does that mean to not touch and open a thing?

If I must go to sleep, should I leave the laptop on all night?

When you got to the stage of mounting the ISO
Did the screen in my screenshot appear

    and then when you
Double-clicked the Setup file to begin the Windows 10 upgrade OR you can right click and click run as admin

What then occurred please did you get another window asking you
Do you want this app to make changes to your device

ARE YOU CERTAIN you clicked setup on the MOUNTED iso
    as per my screenshot

As I said before the mounted ISO appears as a CD drive, but it is not a real one it is a virtual drive created for the mounted ISO

I right-clicked, hit MOUNT, and yes, I clicked on Setup.. I just double-clicked. As for "Do you want this app to make changes to your device", I think so, I can't remember- it's been an hour, but I would guess yes, since I'm always asked this question for so many things I do.

There's a white box, with the window logo on the left, and the word "Windows" to the right of it.

Was that mounted ISO from the download - at the Microsoft site
    download media creation tool
    and then choose ISO

OR was it by chance one you already had

It is either that OR the corruption on the drive is too great for it to work

    OR
    Another possibility is
DID you close ALL open applications and windows BEFORE click on the setup in the mounted ISO

It was from the link you gave me - I never had this before..

I can't remember the timing, but I might have dragged some files from my external HD to the desktop in a panic after reading (incorrectly, I know) I would need an empty USB.

Within the last 10 minutes, I received a Mozilla Firefox crash report, but I don't remember opening up a window..

The only thing (now that the transfer is over) that is open is the same Windows window.

    - - - Updated - - -

    Finally... "INSTALL WINDOWS 10"

Windows Setup will go online to get updates, drivers, and optional features....

There is a checkbox on "I want to help make the installation of Windows better"

I assume I should hit NEXT.... Now it's Checking For Updates.. Now, it wants me to ACCEPT (applicable notices and license terms).......

    I'm at #12 - Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

My only worries are something that enters the equation that is NOT on the above link..,... Or even the possible next step, asking me if I want to keep my files, or keep only my personal files, or the third option - Nothing (where everything is deleted)

    - - - Updated - - -

I think its past midnight where you are at.... I'll wait another 5 minutes. If I don't receive a response, I guess I'll opt to save everything. If it doesn't go well, I can always do it again, right?

    YOU have clicked wrong again
Please as I mentioned - do accept that I cannot post, in matter of this nature, every single instruction typed out

From the guide to the repair install at 8 on the guide
Click/tap on the Change how Windows Setup downloads updates link. (see screenshot below)

the screenshot referred to is the one ON the guide.

    Then
    Item 9 on the guide
Select (dot) Not right now, and click/tap on Next.

I hope it does run, but by clicking as On the GUIDE - NOT RIGHT NOW, it stood a far better chance of proceeding and a lot quicker.

I am signing off for this session, there will NOT be anything that is NOT in the guide
UNLESS it either simply locks up
    OR reports failure to install

We will proceed when I return.

For the past 45 minutes, you were on this page, off and on, as I kept clicking on your profile, so that I could determine if I should wait, but you wouldn't reply.

    It failed.

Then I did it again, THIS time, following every instruction... Failed. BUT, both times, I did attempt to save all my files. I wonder if this makes a difference?

    - - - Updated - - -

Before I went to bed, I tried again. I did the same, this time the 2nd option - FAILED.

The only option left is to have everything deleted, but I don't know if it will work.
