SD card/SD card reader no longer working

Hi. New to this so not sure of category.
    I have a Lenovo G70. Windows 10, 64bit
My SD card reader has stopped working.
In Device Manager, the SD card is not listed.
I can't format the card as it is not listed.
I cannot locate the card at all as it is not listed anywhere.
I've tried chkdsk and get 'Cannot open volume for direct access'
I don't even have the icon displaying when micro SD card is inserted.
It did work previously but I had errors. Scanning and fixing did not help.
I place the SD card in my Android phone and it works fine.
    Please help!
    Thank you for any assistance.

Start menu > Windows System > Control Panel
Top RH corner View by > Small icons
    Open Device Manager
Any items listed showing error symbols (various symbols depending on error) ?
If so, what error message/indication ?

Hi idgat. Thank you for your help.
I did as requested and looked at every entry under Device Manager.
I am not showing error symbols at all.

I assume you've tested multiple SD cards ?

Are you using a normal SD card, or a MicroSD in a carrier ?

    I only have one card.
It is a micro SD card that is placed in a carrier, then inserted into my laptop.
The card itself goes directly into my android. It works in the phone.

Exactly the same as my setup. One possibility, I sometimes find a carrier unreliable, swapping over solves the issue (mind you, more than once I've gone back to using the "faulty" carrier and it works fine next time !

I think you need to get another MicroSD + carrier set and test that. Won't go astray, always handy for a spare.

In the meantime, you could connect your Android device to the computer by cable and transfer <> with that connection (but can be painfully slow !).

You know, every time I put the SD card and carrier into my laptop, I would get an error saying the card needed to be scanned for errors and fixed.I would try that...and did on several occasions to no avail. Apparently what I need to do is just what you've said: get another card and carrier. In the meantime, the cable to transfer between phone and laptop is a good idea too. This has been a nightmare and all because I want album art displayed in my android.
Thank you for your time, help and guidance.

Right click Start > Device Manager > View > Show hidden devices > USB controllers > Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader.
That is where mine is, only becomes unhidden with an SD Card in.

Not all SD cards have good contacts and/or the SD Reader contacts. I clean them with a small piece of card dampened with alcohol, IPA etc.

    Hi Helmut
I looked where you directed me. There's just nothing there...I think

Bradleyb, in your Device Manager do you have anything listed in Storage Controllers? I get an entry for MMC/SD. I just checked a 1GB SD card and a 4GB SDHC card, both worked in File Explorer to show their contents.

Side note: A caveat for such cards is that if they are to be used in a camera they need to be formatted in the camera, not in Windows.
