Front USB 2.0 ports wont work during boot

Oh boy, relieved i finally made headway. Annoyed it took so long.

So i'm working on some bootable flash drives. Problem is, they were booting on one pc, and not the other. Both UEFI, both CSM off, both the same exact drives etc.

I know the usb ports work as i use them relatively often (my front usb2 are closer than the 3 :P)

however for some reason during boot up, it would not see the drives if they were in the front usb 2.0 ports. Sees them in usb 3.0 ports fine.

Does this have something to do with the hand-off type settings u often see in the bios? Any ideas?

its an Asus Maximus X Formula (Z370)

yea, after digging around the uefi, said "ehci/xhci" type settings that i remember from over the years dont even exist anymore - at least not on this board.

so write off that idea. tried with fast boot off, fast boot on as well.

Was operating under the premise that most of their stuff shared the same bios settings more or less. Figured that was an easier descriptor than expecting someone to know the in's and out's of my specific board.

Still, point takin - OP updated :)

Well our boards turn out to be cousins. I just like to review manuals.

What are the front ports connected to, the MB headers or expansion card / hub?

they are connected to the board header on the board. I do have an expansion card for usb ports but its pcie & only populated with my oculus rift stuff/sensors. Cant wait to do away with that :P

    Try this differently.

When you boot with your USB key installed how are you telling it to boot from USB?

I think I've been reading threads about MBR boots or UEFI boots, are those yours? Think you are making boot media with Rufus. I've read so many threads I can't keep them separated.

Oh, your manual and my manual are almost duplicates. Have you seen section 3.6.12 on page 3-20?

I'll have to pop it back open, i actually have it saved as pdf on my pc so that should be easy. I'll take a look.

its not the format as i initially assumed that was in fact the issue. I tried mbr/gpt/ntfs/fat32 etc.

nothing would boot, until i moved it over to the usb 3 slots lol. then i facepalmed at all the time i wasted, and began this new adventure into understanding how they can work fine during windows - but i get nada during post.

i tried with rufus made installers, memtest made installer, minitool made installer. (as i thought it was the particular installer as well initially)

but even the macrium recovery drive wont work unless its in the usb 3.0 ports.

    so i stand corrected.

its been a good long while.

I looked at the manually and noted it the board only has 1 header for usb 2.0 internally. I have 4 usb 2.0 ports on the front that all work so i had to open my case and do an inventory.

Apparently when i built this pc i bought a small pcb/splitter for that very issue. it connects to said usb header on the mobo, and allows you to connect 2 usb headers to it from the front panel.

well, for whatever reason. works fine within windows, but the pc wont detect them during boot. Disappointed but i reckon theres absolutely nothing i can do about it.

Odd that it doesnt work, but you can all but guarantee thats whats going on.

I have a hub connected to mine and they work during boot.

I ask again, how are you trying to boot from these USB ports. Are you using a F key as machine comes to life or are you in BIOS using Boot override?

Bios override. They dont even show in the bios if on the 2.0 front ports.

I can try the other way by smashing the F key during post (i probably did already just dont remember) but im not gonna hold my breath.

Only thing i can surmise (if youre using a splitter without trouble) is that my case 900D has 6 ports on the front. 4 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0.

the 3.0 go to the 3.0 header on the mobo. the 2.0 obviously to their respective header. However its already 4 ports pared down to 2 connectors. Then those 2 connectors go to the splitter, and is further reduced to the 1 header on the mobo.

perhaps that has a hand in it?

No I was hoping to hear you used boot override.

So I don't know what this means to your system but could you, temporarily, disconnect your hub and wire the front ports directly to header. Then test. Not sure what hub is supporting.

May have to trace some wires to ensure you know which of the front ports is actually on header.
