Duplicate file in system 32 and driver store

Hey guys, just wanted to know. I see rcores64.dat inside the file repository folder in driver store and also in system32, are both necessary? This is clean install so no old drivers are on this machine, I under stand the one in driver store because that’s where all the drivers are stored...

I have several copies of that file in the Windows folder and subfolders on the Notebook I'm using now. To put it bluntly, this is a case where DO NOTHING is the best course of action. If Windows is otherwise working properly one wouldn't want to screw anything up inadvertently. And the file size is quite small at less than 100KB, not much drive space to be gained.

Thanks for the reply, mine are larger at about 70mb, not a big deal or question of space more like why lol

It may be more about having backup data useful for a Reset or Restore of Windows.

One is a Driver Storage - the other is System
Keep Both......... And you will find others....

You probably have just the one copy of the file. The WinSxS store makes extensive use of hardlinks, a way to make a single file appear in multiple folders. Virtually all the 'files' in the System32 folder are actually hardlinks, not separate copies of the file.

Determining the size of the Windows Component Store is complicated by the fact that many of the files are used by Windows from directories outside the Windows Component Store using a technique known as hard linking. In such cases, the files from a component version appear both inside and outside the Windows Component Store. By using hard linking Windows is able to appear to keep multiple copies of the same file without actually taking the added space for multiple copies.
Analyze Component Store (WinSxS folder) in Windows 10

So don't worry about apparent multiple copies taking up lots of space, there is actually only one physical copy of each file.
