SMB! was a factor in the spread of WannaCry virus on corporate networks, but enabling it on a home network is relatively safe behind your router's firewall. Anyway, you only need the smb1 client of the W10 machine, not the smb1 server.

This has been bugging me for months!!!

Glad that helped. I have a router that shares a usb hdd plugged into its usb port. Unfortunately the router only supports smb1, so I have to enable the smb1 client too.
