Problem after "Internal SATA Drives show up as removeable media" fix

I had a problem with my SSD showing up as a removeable drive. It always seemed like there were hesitations with that drive so I thought I should fix the proble. To do so, I followed this Microsoft recommendation: Internal SATA Drives show up as removeable media

This is the recommendation I followed:

"Type the following command in the previously opened command prompt and hit Enter:
reg.exe add “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\Parameters\Device” /f /v TreatAsInternalPort /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d x"
where, in my case, x=1

Since doing this, the SSD does not show up as a removeable drive but HD activity light comes on for long periods (20 - 30 seconds) during which nothing appears to happen and keyboard and mouse button inputs are not accepted. Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Ver 1909, OS build 18363.693.

That's an interesting issue. I've not seen that before.

Out of curiosity, is this problem happening only on certain ports? If you move the drive to another port, does that help the situation?

As an example, my motherboard has SATA ports serviced by the the Intel chipset but it also has SATA ports provided by Marvell. I'm wondering if something like that could be the situation in your case where moving to the primary controller might help.

When you disable hot swap and have your power plan at least balanced you enabled hipm-dipm. Some old ssd dont work with hipm-dipm. What is your ssd?

Add AHCI Link Power Management to Power Options in Windows


Use the registry fix (option 2)

Now go to Power Options click on "Change Plan Settings" and then click on "Change advanced Power settings".

Now under "Hard disk" you should have AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM and AHCI Link Power Management - Adaptive options.
Change AHCI Link power management" To active, which means there is no power management for AHCI and finally change Adaptive to 0 milliseconds.

Followed your recommendations except for the very last part "change Adaptive to 0 milliseconds". Where is that setting?

leave the last part and only change ahci link power management to active. restart the machine.
How it is behave?

That appears to have made a massive difference. Start up time from power-on through POST to Windows login screen is about 25 seconds. Thanks for advice as I would never have thought the power plan could have caused this issue.

And if you have the question: why my ssd worked nice when it shown as external?
The answer is this: The windows internally disable the hipm-dipm to the devices that shown as external. So when you made the registry fix to make the ssd to shown as internal, you under the hoods enabled hipm-dipm.
Hipm-dipm also disabled automatically when you chnage power plan to high.

So would this same explanation apply to how a USB connected device, like a printer or scanner, appears to slow down the startup process? If so, is there a practical way to deal with that?
