    Power supply noise

Guys, I built this PC about 2 years ago. Since about a week or so the power supply in it started making this noise. I'm guessing it's a fan. I tried to record it with my phone:

Any idea if I can repair it without buying a new power supply?

The power supply is EVGA 1000 G3.

EVGA offers a 10 year warranty on this power supply. You should contact them for a replacement.

At a guess, the fan isn't generic, so it may be difficult to fit a replacement that isn't from eVGA.

They may not sell them to customers, if only because of liability considerations. There may be high voltages present in the PSU, and the high voltages may still be present after the unit has been powered down for a while.

The warranty suggestion is probably best. It'd be nice if eVGA would cross-ship a replacement, so you wouldn't be without the PSU. eVGA's customer support traditionally has been one of the best in the business, but I don't know if they're that accomodating.

Do not try to fix a PSU unless you really know what you are doing since there may be residual energy stored which could cause a severe electric shock.

TRY sucking all the dust out using a Vac cleaner, Try to stop the Fan from moving as this can produce a BACK Emf( i use a plastic bick pen). DO NOT open the PSU unless qualified.

Hi everyone. And thanks for your replies!

I did contact Evga and initiated the RMA. It took about a week to get to this point. So I wouldn't call that process "smooth."

They provide two options. One is for me to send this broken power supply back to them and the second one, what they call "cross-ship", or in other words, I pay them a collateral after which they will ship a replacement power supply and then I will have to ship them the broken one. After which they will refund my money.

So I thought that cross-shipping sounded as a good deal .... until I saw how much they want me to pay for the collateral.

They want $229.99 collateral, while I paid $149.99 in June of 2017 (more than 2 years ago) for that PSU when it was brand new.

So I'm not sure now, is it worth dealing with their RMA?

They have a bunch of provisions in a small text when you sign that RMA of why it may be denied. I just don't want to end up paying $230 for a PSU + shipping charge for a broken one.

    Any suggestions?

$229.99 is the current list price for an eVGA 1000 G3.

If they are offering you the "advanced RMA" (EVGA - Support - EVGA Advanced RMA) without additional charge, they are doing you a favor.

The "collateral" they request is a credit card. They say they won't charge it if you return the defective unit.

eVGA supposedly has about the best customer service in the business. I've never had to use it, so far.

If you can't trust them, I don't know what to suggest.

I've done the Advanced RMA (AKA Cross Ship) a couple of times with them. Never had an issue.

@essenbe well, it's good to know. Thanks.

@bobkn where are you taking it from? And also why did I pay $150 for the same PSU in 2017? Do PSUs go up in price over time?

No reason to not trust EVGA. They are the ONLY video card brand that I ever buy. Take the RMA back, as long as you ship back and get the drop off receipt from the shipper, you are in the clear.
