How to repair a Hard drive

    Hi

i have a 2 TB Seagate internal HDD, I am unsure what happened, it’s not very old and has always been fitted inside a PC case, so hasn’t been knocked.

Windows refuses to boot up with it connected. I unplugged the Sata data lead, allowed windows to boot then reconnected it.

windows drive manage shows it as bad, with no option to do anything.....I ran seagate tools for windows, the short and long test passed, but when I selected fix everything, it failed......did a sector test with Aome partition manager and it started reporting sector errors immediately, but allowed me to rebuild the MBR ?

I realise I may have to give up and dump this HDD, but want to be certain I have tried everything first. I tried seatools booted from a USB, but couldn’t work out how to use the program to repair the HDD. See image for screenshot

is there anything else I can try ? 99% of the searches for HDD repair tools, simply give data recovery software, there IS a difference, but that simple premise seems to be lost on many advertising their wares...

many thanks in advance How to repair a Hard drive-9fec1ec4-f58b-4b33-896d-b37053e18a39.jpg

That doesn't sound good. I would get a new one.

Just out of curiosity, what is the exact model of that disk?

I remember somebody somewhere mentioning using Spinrite Option 4 (I think it is) to fix a HDD; however, with a 2TB HDD, my wild guess based on past experiences with 100MB HDDs, your grandkids might be able to see it finish.

The Sea Tools for Windows long generic test is equivalent to what other computer manufacturers use for warranty replacement.

    Replace: ST2000DM001

In case the drive is no longer under warranty there is a Seagate bootable repair option.

Post the link into the thread.
(Not familiar with it but it had been tried in the opening post)

Was HD Tune not able to run the three tests?

This is another option to see bad blocks: Download Macrorit Disk Scanner Portable 4.3.5

There are multiple methods to test drives:

    a) SMART
    b) Benchmarks
    c) Error or surface scans
    d) chkdsk
    e) short generic
    f) long generic
    g) etc.

Drives can display normal results for one or more and a fail on one test.

The long generic has been a reliable method for failure testing.

There are multiple methods to test drives:

    a) SMART passed, I think....
    b) Benchmarks
    c) Error or surface scans did sector test and first few sectors reported Bad, so discontinued, but not sure if that definitely means its a hardware fault ???
    d) chkdsk if I use the Windows Chkdsk, it will need a drive letter, windows disk management has assigned ‘Each but will that apply to chkdsk ? Don’t want to interfere with one of the other 4 HDDs I have installed.....or should I unplug all HDDs except the boot ssd and faulty HDD ?

    thanks
    e) short generic Passed
    f) long generic Failed
    g) etc.

Drives can display normal results for one or more and a fail on one test.

The long generic has been a reliable method for failure testing.
should I try spinrite ? It looks very basic and old.......or should I try a low level format program maybe, problem is it being detected by the program

    P.S. any thoughts on this
Download the latest version of HDD Regenerator free in English on CCM - CCM

    thanks

The disk obviously has serious problems.

Do you have data on there that you need? If not, I wouldn't waste time with it.
