    Cpu upgrade

I have an LGA 1366 socket and i7 920 cpu, id like to upgrade the cpu to meet Intel Core i5-4590/AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better,

Is this going to be possible on that socket?

    Unfortunately, no.

Tip: If you search on processor with a search like the following you can easily get the information on what socket the CPU uses:

    Intel i5-4590 specs

That CPU is many generations later and uses a completely different socket. Also, no way you'll ever put an AMD on a socket intended for Intel.

After looking at the specifications of what you have and the AMD I'd think it best to replace the motherboard, CPU w/cooler and RAM/memory. Going from a 2.66GHz CPU to the 4.00GHz CPU is a pretty big leap. I'd think going from the Intel i7 to an Intel i5 may not get the processing speed desired.

There was a time when Intel and AMD CPUs could be interchanged on the same board but it was way back in 80386, 80486 and maybe first Pentium days but there were numerous jumpers to be set/changed. All that changed after the time Intel attempted to patent/copyright the term of 80586 but couldn't do that with a number so went with the name Pentium which they could do [about 20 years ago].

Actually, in this particular instance, because the i7-920 and the i5-4590 are so many generations apart the i5 will absolutely obliterate that i7 in performance. It's not even close.

That socket included the Extreme Edition 965, which has a Passmark score of 961. Introduced about 2008.

    The 4590 has a score of 7353; over 7 times the 965. Introduced 2013.

I'd guess you are out of luck.

There was an Extreme Edition 975 that likely is marginally stronger than the 965.

Some Xeon CPUs used the same socket, but I'm not sure if they will work on your motherboard.

Been a while since your last upgrade, eh? (I7-920: introduced 2008.)

Just out of curiosity, why I5-4590 or FX-8350? Both are old. The I5 was launched in the second quarter of 2014, and discontinued in mid 2017. The FX-8350 is older yet, from 2012.

I haven't been following Intel CPUs much lately, but the current mainstream ones are the Coffee Lake series, using LGA1151 motherboads. (Have to be sure to get one with a compatible chipset.) For AMD, the Ryzen Third Generation series (in Ryzen 5, 7, and 9). These need Socket AM4. (X570 chipset required for PCI-E 4.0.) All of the latest Intel or AMD boards require DDR4 RAM. (The LGA1366 board used DDR3.)

There are higher end systems that support quad channel RAM. For Intel the motherboards use the X299 chipset (LGA2066). For AMD, the latest Threadrippers us sTRX4. If you're unfamiliar with quad channel RAM, you may not need it.
